Merry Christmas

Hello everyone ,

oh yes its nearly here! We have been well and truly filled with festive spirit this week .
Huge thanks to all of you who came along to the sunflowers concert on Wednesday - as ever it was standing room only :-) its always such a pleasure to welcome so many into the nursery and helping to get our Christmas celebrations underway . In particular its wonderful to meet extended family members - aunties , uncles , cousins and grandparents who we often hear about but rarely see! We do hope you enjoyed the sunflowers performance of 'Christmas Eve in the Toy Shop' (and well done to you all for joining in with the singing :-)) The children and staff worked very hard to produce this event , and I'm sure that you will all agree it was well worth it !
The raffle for the hamper was expertly drawn by Ashton as it was his birthday(thank you Ashton) , and the winner was Gregor in the sunflowers - congratulations! He may be too young to enjoy all the treats inside , but Im sure that his parents will appreciate them  ! Many thanks to all who donated items/bought tickets . We raised £70.00 from this for the Staff Development Fund.
And as if that wasn't enough excitement - yesterday we had the xmas party ! There was dancing and games and crackers and party food and SANTA too!!!!! I'm sure all the children would like to thank him for taking time out of his very busy schedule to come and visit us .......and are all looking forward to his visit next week.

Barring the arrival of wintry weather or other unexpected events, this is likely to be the last post of 2013 . Id like to thank you all for your continued support and your contributions to the nursery - it really does made a big difference to the setting to have your involvement and its very much appreciated .

From all of us at Craigton Lodge - we wish you a Christmas full of wonder and joy,  and that 2014 brings you all health and happiness  .
We shall close at 6pm on Monday 23rd and will see you all again 8am Monday 6th Jan 2014 - enjoy the break - we shall! :-)

Christmas at Craigton

Hello everyone ,

Oh yes indeed- we are all well and truly in the festive spirit now , with our main Christmas events taking place this week .

The sunflowers concert is on Wednesday at 3pm . This seasonal spectacular is always very well attended and its standing room only . The buttercups , bluebells and snowdrops were treated to a dress rehearsal last week and they thoroughly enjoyed it ! Please note that there is audience participation - so I hope that you are all in good voice :-)
After the show , we will draw the raffle for the Xmas Hamper.  Tickets on sale in both buildings - please do this now as we'll be very busy with last minute preparations on the day. Thank you to everyone who has donated items for this - somebody is in for a treat! All proceeds from this go to our Staff Development fund .
We will also be serving some festive refreshments to really get you in the Christmas mood - we look forward to seeing you all there.

And that's not all..........oh yes its the Christmas party on Thursday 2-4pm for all buttercups and sunflowers. there will be fun and games and singing and dancing and Santa too! Though I dont know if he'll join in the dancing :)

We recently had a near miss as a child ran down the driveway and into the carpark as cars were arriving /leaving . Please ensure that when you pick up , that your children (including older siblings) are supervised . This is even more important on these dark evenings ........and drivers please watch your speed . Thank you .

Festive fun at Craigton

Hello everyone ,

all the children are very much in the festive spirit here- all enjoying the countdown with their advent calendars each day and looking forward to Santa 's arrival.

Today we are taking full advantage of the lovely weather with most of the nursery out as I write this - the snowdrops and bluebells have gone for a walk around the village , while the sunflowers have gone for a visit to the park . All the children have recently had visits to the library choosing some great festive stories  , and some have been to the post office with very special letters and parcels to send. The sunflowers have made their own postbox in their room - please use this to send cards to your friends at nursery . If you are sending cards , please just one for the whole group - we will display the cards for all the children to see and they will be recycled afterwards .

The rehearsals for the Christmas concert are well underway - we look forwrad to welcoming  you'll  all  on Wednesday 18th at 3pm . After the performance , we have the draw for the Christmas Hamper- tickets for this are now on sale  on both buildings- £1 a strip  . We are also warmly welcoming any donations for the hamper .

Dont forget its the xmas party on Thursday 19th 2-4pm - and I can now conform that Santa will definitely be coming along.........ohhhhhh its so exciting!

The snowdrops and bluebells are looking for Christmas items for their treasure boxes - parents should already have had a note about this- this is just a gentle reminder :-)

We have had two more cases of chickenpox in the schoolhouse today  please see link for more info
http://www.patient.co.uk/health/chickenpox-in-children-under-12

And finally :
We shall close at 6pm on  Monday 23rd December and re-open 8am Monday 6th January 2014

Wednesday 4 December 2013

Health Notice

We have had another confirmed case of croup in the schoolhouse and also one of chickenpox .

Please see the links below for further details :

http://www.patient.co.uk/health/croup

http://www.patient.co.uk/health/chickenpox-in-children-under-12

Can I please remind you to keep your child at home if they are unwell . Children will recover much more quickly and fully if they rest at home  and should not be at nursery if they are unwell . We do not have the resources or training to care for unwell children . Theses infections and viruses spread very quickly in the nursery environment, and can affect all the children and their families, anyone picking up children or visiting (some of whom may be elderly or pregnant ) as well as the staff and their families .
Your co-operation will help us limit the spread of any viruses/infections as much as we can . Thank you

From 6th to 16th December there will be a Santa's Grotto  in a marquee in the gardens . Children can walk through a forest and light show , a craft area where they can make a small gift , before going to meet Santa . There will also be musical sessions , with local bands playing festive tunes .

Monday 2 December 2013

Happy December

Hello everyone ,

yes it seems that most  are now in the festive mood with many children telling us about decorating their xmas tress at the weekend and the excitement of opening their Advent calendars . The sunflowers are decorating the tree here as I type this , though we have a mystery as the lights are nowhere to be found!

All sunflower parents will find a note in your child's wall file regarding costumes for the concert - please make sure you pick this  up soon so you know what your child will need . This seasonal spectacular will take place on Wednesday 18th December 3pm and all parents , siblings, grandparents, aunties , uncles and cousins are welcome to come along - this is always  a popular and very well attended event  and we look forward to welcoming you to our festive celebrations .

And while on the subject ................a HUGE thank you to all of you who donated a gift to the Giving Tree appeal. As always we are all overwhelmed by your generosity . Your gifts will help to make Christmas a happy day  for a child who may not have many happy times .......and bringing a little joy to a child you will never know is really what Christmas is all about . As they are unable to thank  you themselves , may I do so on their behalf .........thank you so much . PS Santa's helpers are obviously busy so haven't been to pick up yet - so there's still time if you haven't donated yet!

The Scottish Government has launched a new information campaign - Be Safe Be Sure - National Private Fostering Campaign . There are concerns that private fostering arrangements are not being brought to the attention of Children's Services which may leave some  children in potentially vulnerable circumstances . For more information please visit
http://scotland.gov.uk/Topics/People/Young-People/protecting/lac/fostercare/private-fostering

More health news - we have had to send 5 children home today with high temperatures and very bad coughs - please keep your child at home if  they are unwell or have been given medication to reduce a temperature. Children should stay at home until they are recovered . Please help us to try to keep the spread of viruses and infections as low as we can - you co-operation would be much appreciated .

Dont forget  its the Xmas party on Thursday 19th Dec 2-4pm - this is for all sunflowers and buttercups. The snowdrops and bluebells have their own more restrained celebration for those children who normally attend.

The nursery will close at 6pm on Monday 23rd December and re-open 8am Monday 6th January 2014

Wednesday 27 November 2013

Play on the Shortest Day

Aberdeen Play Forum have organised a play event on Saturday 21st December 11am to 3pm at Duthie Park . There will be free activities for children and families. The event will go ahead whatever the weather , but please note that some activities are weather dependant . For more information please contact
Jennifer.brownlie@aberlour.org.uk   07772226617

There are still a few giving tree tags left - please ensure all gifts are returned by this Friday.......... . And while we're in the Christmas mood , we have an urgent Santa appeal . Our regular Santa will not be able to make it along to the xmas party this year , so we need a jolly volunteer to step into his sleigh . If you know of any Santa who will be free to come along on Thursday 19th December around 3pm for approx half an hour and hand out gifts to the Craigton children , please let me know as soon as possible . Santa outfit and jingle bells supplied - will need own boots! Magic reindeer optional.

More about Christmas - we encourage all the children and staff at Craigton to reduce , reuse and recycle. So if you or your children wish to send cards to others at nursery , can we please  ask that you send just one for the whole group- these will then be displayed so that all the children can see the cards, and will be recycled afterwards - thank you .

Those of you like me who loathe shopping at the best of times , but particularly at this time of year(did I hear a bah humbug!) will no doubt be doing a great deal of online shopping over the next few weeks . Gotta love the internet :-) If so , please sign up to
https://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/support-a-good-cause/    then every time you buy online , you will be raising money for our Staff Development Fund . There are thousands of retailers participating including the major supermarkets , travel agents , John Lewis , Debenhams , Amazon and many  more . It doesn't cost you a penny - they regularly have voucher deals and special promotions so could even save you some money . If you download the find and remind toolbar , this will tell you when you a visiting a  participating retailer so you dont even need to go onto  the site - and doing this will raise 50p . The amounts donated each time are small, but they really add up . We currently have 19 supporters who over the past two years have raised over £700 - just by shopping online . Please join us .

Reminders of those important festive dates :
Sunflowers Xmas Concert - Wednesday 18th December 3pm
Xmas party : Thursday 19th December 2-4pm
We shall close at 6pm Monday 23rd December and re-open 8am Monday 6th January

Monday 25 November 2013

Health Notice

We have had one confirmed and one suspected case of Hand , Foot and Mouth in the schoolhouse building - please see this link for further information .
http://www.patient.co.uk/health/hand-foot-and-mouth-disease-leaflet

We also have  a new case of chicken pox which we thought  had gone !
http://www.patient.co.uk/health/chickenpox-in-children-under-12

This is the worst time of year for the spread of virus and infections , so please help us to keep this as low as we can . Be extra vigilant with your hygiene - particularly handwashing ( we have hand sanitisers in both buildings - please make use of them) and if your child is unwell , please keep them at home until they are recovered .

We do still have some gift tags left for the Giving Tree Appeal - please bring back any gifts by this Friday as they will be collected on Monday - thank you

Culter Christmas Lights

Yes indeed its that time of year again!

The Culter  Christmas Lights will be switched on this Saturday 23rd November . Please go along to the village hall 4-6pm and join in the celebrations. There will be carol singing accompanied by the Granite City Brass Band, mulled wine and mince pies , a magic show and I have heard a rumour that there will be an appearance by a very very very special  visitor ! So go along , have some fun , support your local community , and get into the festive spirit :-)
while on matters festive - There are still a few gift tags available for the Giving tree appeal - please do this very soon as the gifts need to be back to us by next Friday 29th November ready for collection by Santa's helpers on Monday 2nd December - thank you .

Some reminders :
Please do not allow your child to arrive eating/drinking or to bring food/drink into nursery . We have several children with severe allergies attending the nursery. We take great care to ensure that these children (and all the others) do not come into contact with anything that may cause them harm, but we cannot do this if food items are brought in . It may only be a biscuit crumb , but this could potentially be life threatening to some children- we'd very much appreciate your co-operation with this .
Please ensure that you close and chain the garden gates every time you use them . Please consider that it could be your child that runs out into the carpark or the road because the gate was not chained.  It only takes seconds for this to happen and is easily prevented by ensuring the gates are chained .

We saw our first snow of the season this week. The children had great  fun with our sledges , as well as activities with coloured snow , and discussions on how quickly it would melt(and why) when brought indoors. Though it has now gone , I'm sure it wont be the last we see . Please be aware that in bad weather , we may need to close the nursery early  to allow staff to travel home safely or because staff are not able to get here . We may close the carpark if there is a lot of snow or its very icy- make sure you enter very slowly as the chain may be up . Please ensure that you visit the blogspot on those days to check updates - there is a delay in posts being emailed to you , but they appear immediately on the blogspot    http://craigtonlodgenursery.blogspot.co.uk/

And finally some dates for your diary :
The sunflowers Christmas concert : Wednesday 18th December 3pm
Craigton Christmas Party : Thursday 19th December 2-4pm . All sunflowers and buttercups are invited to this - the babies  have their own more restrained celebrations for those children normally attending .
Please note that as this is such a busy time  , we are unable to accommodate extra sessions all that week .
More information about these two very exciting events will be issued nearer the time .

The nursery will close at 6pm on Monday 22nd December and reopen 8am Monday 6th January 2014

Friday 15 November 2013

Parents Evening

A big thank you to all of you who made it along to Parent's evening yesterday and helped to make it such a success. We always enjoy this event - its great to have an opportunity to talk to parents (especially the ones we don't see often) and to show you what your children have  been doing whilst here . Its especially useful to get your feedback and we all really appreciate you coming along . Don't worry if you weren't able to attend - you are welcome to take your child's folio home to have a look through(though please bring it back) Remember that you don't need to wait for Parents evening to view these- they are available any time .

A reminder that the Giving Tree Appeal is under way and the gift tags are going very quickly - so if you'd like to participate , please get yours asap . The gifts need to be returned by Friday 29th November as Santa's helpers will be collecting them on Monday 2nd December.

And it looks like the tummy bug has arrived - we have had 2 reported cases today . Please be extra vigilant regarding hygiene especially hand washing( we have hand sanitiser units in both buildings) and observe the 48 hour exclusion time to help us limit the spread of this bug as much as we can - we'd very much appreciate your co-operation with this - thank you .

Giving Tree Appeal

Many of you will know that every year we support the Giving Tree Appeal organised by the Instant Neighbour charity . This is a scheme to collect and distribute Christmas presents to children in this area who would otherwise go without .

We are all aware that times are hard just now , and this time of year is busy and very expensive for all. But please join in this appeal . Every year I attempt to tug at your heart strings to encourage you to donate a gift and each year we are all bowled over by your generous response .

So ......as you once again cant believe that its only 6 weeks to go , as you write out hundreds of cards, battle through the ever  increasing crowds trying to find the perfect gifts for all your family , stand in very long queues in the post office because you missed the last posting dates overseas, start panicking as you realise its increasingly unlikely you'll get a babysitter the weekend before Xmas  , and begin to stock up on weird and wonderful foods that you wouldn't buy at any other time of year and that nobody will eat . As you wonder where everyone will sit for the big Xmas lunch and if the giant turkey will fit into your oven, as you struggle to wrap presents after midnight when the children are asleep , your sticky tape keeps splitting and you cant find  the gift tags.......and on and on it goes .

But  of course all that stress will be worth it  , as you tuck the children into bed on Christmas Eve , their eyes sparking with visions of Santa making his way to them and  when you see the look of wonder and joy on their  faces on Christmas morning once he has been  , safe and happy , surrounded by a loving family .

Please spare a thought during those times for children in this area who are much less fortunate than your own , and for whom Santa will not come .

In each department  there are gift tags with a child's name and age . Please take one , wrap an appropriate gift , attach the tag and return it to us by FRIDAY 29th November , as Santa's helpers will be collecting them on Monday 2nd December .

This really is what Christmas is all about - taking a little time and effort to help bring  joy to a child who sorely needs it

Parents Evening

A final reminder to come along tomorrow evening between 6pm and 7:30pm for Parents Evening .This is an opportunity for you to talk to staff about your child's progress and, find out in more detail what they do here( we all know when asked what did you do at nursery the answer is invariably 'nothing' or 'don t know') You can also see  some of the activities on offer to the children , look through your child's folio and meet other parents. We look forward to seeing you there.

Health alert

Hello everyone ,

we have had another confirmed case of chickenpox in the schoolhouse building . Please the the following link for symptoms    http://www.patient.co.uk/health/chickenpox-in-children-under-12

I have also been informed by a parent that there is a nasty tummy bug going around in the local schools so please be on the lookout for this too (and thank you for the info!) . Don't forget that children must not return to nursery after having a tummy bug for 48 hours after the symptoms have stopped .

As we are heading into winter and all kinds of bugs and viruses , can I please remind you it is our policy that a child who has a temperature or has been given medication to reduce it , will not be admitted to nursery.  If  your child becomes unwell whilst here , we will contact you and ask you to take them home- please arrange to do this as soon as possible . High temperatures in young children can have serious consequences .Whilst we do appreciate that you are working , an unwell child should rest at home until recovered .
We have Health Protection Scotland/NHS Exclusion criteria on display in both buildings - if you are unsure , please check with staff . Please observe the exclusion times so that we can limit the spread of these infections as much as we can- these infections affect all the children (and their families), visitors(some of whom will be elderly or pregnant and so at higher risk) , and all the staff and their families . Your co-operation would be very much appreciated.

A reminder too,  not to allow your child to bring toys or other precious items from home , unless specifically asked to do so . These items are invariably 'borrowed' , lost or broken , and this often causes distress . Please leave them at home .

Sunflower parents - thank you for your feedback on the ILD - can we ask though that only those parents who have been asked to do so by staff leave comments on the system for the time being. Whilst we appreciate your enthusiasm , we are monitoring this during the trial , and can only handle a small number at the moment - once we go live next year , you will all be able to comment as much as you like !

Don't forget Parents Evening next week - Thursday 14th Nov - come along anytime between 6pm and 7:30pm- hope to see you all there .

And finally some dates for your diary for the up coming winter festival celebrations
Sunflowers Concert - afternoon Wednesday 18th December
Christmas Party - afternoon Thursday 19th December - all buttercups and sunflowers are invited to this.
Times tbc and further details will be issued nearer the time , but we've already had parents asking for these dates!
We will close at 6pm on Monday 23rd December and re-open 8am Monday 6th January 2014

Friday 1 November 2013

After Halloween !

Thank you to everyone who came along in their Halloween costumes this week , and for bringing in your homemade lanterns for us all to see - you have been busy! We had a huge array of outfits - there were witches and dragons , pirates and ghosts , cats and bats , pumpkins and princesses, superheros and ninjas and many more - well done to you all for your efforts!

And next we have Guy Fawkes - if you're going to a firework display this weekend , wrap up warm , have a great time and dont forget the sparklers!

We have had several cases of a mystery malaise in the sunflowers this week . Children have been out of sorts , easily upset and quite tired , accompanied by a slightly raised temperature - so far it doesnt seem to develop into anything more serious- just be aware that there's something going around .

Following recent staff appraisals , I am delighted to tell you that Maureen(sunflowers) is now a Senior Early Years Practitioner . Maureen has been with us at Craigton since 2003 and has spent time in all departments . She has completed all her training here , achieving CCLD Level II in 2007 and CCLD III early last year . Maureen was the first staff member to be part funded for her qualification by the Staff Development Fund, which you all contribute so generously to -  this has given a valued and experienced member of staff the opportunity to extend her knowledge and skills and now assume a senior role in the nursery . So thank you all for your support - it really does have an impact on the nursery .................and congratulations Maureen !

Don't forget its Parents Evening on Thursday 14th November 6pm to7:30pm - we look forward to seeing you all then .
Thanks for all your feedback so far on the ILD - we shall be asking for more detailed feedback after the trail , but your comments have been very helpful and much appreciated!

Don't forget to tell us if your child wont be coming to nursery for any reason at all - its important that we know who will be here each day , and in the case of illness we may need to alert other parents - we'd really appreciate your help in this - thank  you .

Have a lovely weekend- enjoy the fireworks!

Health Alert

We have had another confirmed case of chikenpox in the school house building . Please see the link below for further information

http://www.patient.co.uk/health/chickenpox-in-children-under-12

Please note that children with chickenpox cannot return to nursery until no new spots are appearing , and they are healing - this is normally about 5 days after the first spots appear .

And don't forget to come along on Parents Evening 6pm to 7.30pm Thursday 14th November

Thursday 24 October 2013

Pre-school news

Hello everyone ,

Some of  you may be aware that we have been trialling a new web- based assessment and recording tool in the sunflowers . The Individual Learning Dairy(ILD) allows staff to record observations and photos of the children , and links these into the experiences and outcome in the CfE . This can be done whilst with the children and where appropriate with their contributions . Using this has meant that staff do not need so much time out of the room to keep children's folios and assessments up to date- something we all all like !

We are now able to open the ILD  to parents so you can have direct access to our observations on your child' s progress. This will be for a trail period only until 29/11/13 .  All sunflowers parents will find a letter in your child's file giving full details on how to access the ILD . You will have  a unique username and password which will allow you access to your child's record  . We will be asking a small number of parents to add comments on the ILD during the trial . Please do not add anything during this time unless you have been asked to by staff , as we will need to monitor this to ensure its working well , before we open it fully , probably in January once we have had time to get your feedback and address any glitches in the system .
Please note that the system is currently set up with a 7 day delay in new observations - this gives us time to ensure that they are accurate and relevant before being posted .

We hope that this will be a welcome and useful tool for you , and we'd really appreciate your feedback after the trial .

Its Halloween next week and all children are welcome to come in costume and bring along any homemade lanterns - we are looking forward to seeing everyone dressed up - there's always a huge variety and its such fun!

And finally , don't forget that the clocks go back this weekend - that means darker evenings. The carpark and both buildings are well lit , but please take extra care in the dark.

Staffing news

Hello everyone ,

Sadly , it will be Suzi's (sunflowers) last day with us on Friday . We all wish her well for the future.
This does mean that we shall be having some new staff joining us soon though!
Stefanie Laing will be joining the schoolhouse as a partitme nursery assistant, Tuesday , Wednesday and Thursday mornings from next week . Stefanie has previous experience as a childminder , as a support worker in primary school  , and has three children of her own .
The sunflowers will be joined by Petra Gojdanova and Paula Canales Escriva as assisiant EYP's also from next week . Petra has been a relief assistant in nurseries and has been recently working with an afterschool club whilst completing her SVQ III . Paula was an Early Years Teacher in her native Spain , before moving to Aberdeen earlier this year .
They have all spent some time over the past two weeks in the rooms with the children  , beginning to get to know us, and we'd like like to give them a great big Craigton WELCOME . It can take time to remember  all those new names and faces , so please make yourselves known to them  .

And that's not all: I'm delighted to tell you that Cari Kenrick(Assistant EYP bluebells) has completed her induction period and now joins us as a permanent staff member , and  Melissa Sinclair (bluebells) is now a fully fledged EYP after gaining her qualification earlier  this year , and successfully completing our Craigton induction into  a new role . Congratulations to you both!

You should by now all have received the proofs of the lovely Christmas cards created by your children - if you don't have them yet,  they are in your child's wall file so please pick them up asap . If you like them , you can order these in packs of 10 for £5,00 - full instructions are with the card .
We have also distributed the Scholastic Book Club Christmas catalogue, with lots of  great book ideas for you know what.
If you'd like to order either of these , please return by Friday 1st November .  They will be sent away the following week to ensure delivery in plenty of  time .

Dont forget Parents Evening is on Thursday 14th November 6pm-7:30pm - we look forward to seeing you all there .
There is also a Parent Forum meeting next week , so please let a member know if you'd like anything raised at this meeting . This years members are : Erin Brown , Carl Gerrard , Claire Molloy , Deirdre Strachan and Madhuri Thakur, Minutes of  these meetings are displayed on all department information boards .

And finally - thank you for the safe return of the missing waterproof suit last week - much appreciated! This did lead to some suggestions from parents regarding the conservatory area - thank you for these- we are currently looking at options for providing more pegs in this area. Its not easy as we are restricted with wall space - but  we'll do what we can!

This is a popular choice and several children at the nursery have these ......if you do , can you please check that you have the right one. If you find the missing suit , please return it asap as its needed urgently . Thank you

And Chantel will now be starting her new job earlier than anticipated, so her last day with us will be this Friday 18th October - best wishes for the future Chantel!

Autumn at Craigton

Good afternoon everyone ,

Yes its definitely autumn now - its damp and getting colder , and the days are becoming shorter(dont forget  the clocks go back on 27th - that's less than two weeks away!) That said , we still spend as much time as possible outdoors as there's so much  to discover in autumn - the leaves are changing colour and falling from the trees which means the garden looks different everyday . The leaves can then be made into big piles, transported around the garden and nursery in wheelbarrows , buckets and trucks (as well as in pockets and hoods!) . As its quite wet , the children can enjoy the endless wonders of  a puddle , and continue to experiment with mud , sand  and water  to create all kinds of textures and have great fun role playing in the outdoor cafe .
As the weather is turning , its even more important to ensure that the children have suitable outdoor gear . At this time of year that means : Waterproof jacket and trousers , or one piece suit, welllies or waterproof boots, and as we move onto winter-  hat , gloves and scarf . Dont forget they also need soft soled shoes or slippers for indoors , and  a full change of clothes each day- and wherever possible all these items should have your child's name or initials on them - thank you .

Unless you've managed to avoid all shops and media over the past few weeks , you'll know that its Halloween soon ! We shall be getting in to the spirit of things at Craigton - all children are welcome to come in costume on Thursday 31st  , and please bring along any homemade lanterns too - we love seeing your wonderful creations! All children will have the opportunity to join in Halloween activities all that week so nobody will miss out .

And that also means that its time for Parents Evening ! This year it will be on Thursday 14th November 6pm-7:30pm . Dont panic - you're not expected to be here all that time! This is an informal evening for all parents to come along , look at your child's folio, have a good look around  their room and chat to the staff about your child's progress. Its also a great opportunity  to meet other parents . You can come any time between 6pm and 7:30pm . We would ask that wherever possible that you leave the children at home - staff will be busy talking to parents and are unable to supervise children . Thank you .

Please take extra care when entering and leaving the carpark as the nights become darker - it will be more difficult to see children in this area so please drive very , very slowly .

Can I also remind you to let us know if your child will not be attending  for any reason- its very important that staff know which children will be here each day , and in the case of illness , we may need to alert other parents. Thank you.

I know that some of you will already been looking ahead to next year and planning holidays etc so please note that the nursery will be closed on the following dates :
Close at 6pm Monday 23rd December and reopen 8am Monday 6th January 2014
Easter Monday - 21st April
MayDay - 5th May
Aberdeen holiday - 14th July
Aberdeen holiday- 22nd September

And finally - we never know when the wintry weather will arrive , but when it does please log onto the blogspot for updates on possible closures - there is a delay in emails being sent so you will need to follow the live site for up to date information . We occasionally need to close early in extreme conditions to allow staff to travel home safely , and we also close the carpark in icy/snowy conditions.

Craigton Round up

Hello everyone ,

We've been having a busy time at Craigton . On Friday we had the grand opening of the outdoor cafe - the ribbon was cut by Andrew(sunflowers) who also gave a very impressive speech :-) and then all the sunflowers enjoyed their homemade scones in the cafe .
The schoolhouse children are enjoying their Autumn theme ,with lots of opportunities for seeing the changes to the plants and trees in the garden , and further afield al over the village on their walks in the local  area . All the children have been chasing falling leaves , collecting them in wheelbarrows and trucks , and moving them around the garden , We've had lots of discussions on seasons , changing weather , why the leaves fall as well as colours and textures of the leaves . Thats a lot of learning !

There have also been quite a few changes in all the rooms - we have been reviewing the children's environment recently, and moving things around . The children like the changes , and we hope you do too! We see this as an ongoing process , and will continue to make improvements where we can. All staff have been involved in this and have contributed some  excellent ideas :-)

We will also be having some other changes soon - both Suzi and Chantel(sunflowers) will be leaving towards the end of this month to move onto new ventures - we all wish them the very best for the future! This means that we have been recruiting staff , and next week we will be joined by three new faces so they can see what we do at Craigton . Stephanie will be in the schoolhouse ,  Petra and Paula will be in pre-school . They will all be with us at some point throughout the week  - so don't be surprised when you see them ! They all have previous experience with children and we hope that they all enjoy their time with us next week.

Health notice

Good afternoon everyone ,

We have had another confirmed case of chickenpox , this time in the schoolhouse .  Please see  http://www.patient.co.uk/health/chickenpox-in-children-under-12 for symptoms . Please note that any child with chickenpox should not attend nursery until no new spots are appearing and exiting ones are healing - usually 5 days from first symptoms. As we are heading into autumn/winter(sorry!) please remember to keep your child at home if they are unwell , and to let us know so we can alert other parents- also please make sure your contact details are up to date so we can reach you quickly if your child becomes unwell whilst here. Thank you  .

A reminder for all parents with children under 4 yrs  to contribute to Aberdeen City Council's consultation on proposed changes to pre-school eduction in the city . You can  find the survey at
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/C6T97SK

Please note the consultation closes this week - submit your replies by Thursday 3rd October . This is your chance to have a say in how pre-school eduction will be delivered in the city so do it today!

The Scottish Book Trust are gifting all 3 year old children in Scotland in their ante-preschool year , a Bookbug Pirate pack - all eligible children will find these packs in their files today . These packs are for you to share at home with your child . For more information please visit http://scottishbooktrust.com/bookbug

We now have an outdoor cafe at Craigton :-) the sunflowers children and staff(especially Maureen) have been busy creating a role play area which is proving very popular. We are all continuing to make the most of the mild weather and are spending as much time as we can out doors. We really do believe that outdoor learning and play is hugely important for the children and we encourage and support  this as much as we can. Even in our often unreliable Scottish weather..which means the children must have suitable out door gear (There is no such thing as bad weather - just bad clothing!) We will shortly be issuing more detailed guidance on what that actually means, so please watch this space !

Hannah is in S5 at Cults academy , and joins Catharine(schoolhouse) and Jemma(pre-school) completing our 4-6 team . Road Safety

Good afternoon ,

As part of the Scottish Government initiative on road safety , all pre-school children are being gifted books following the adventures of Ziggy . Children in their ante pre-school year will receive 'Ziggy and the lollipop' and 'Ziggy visits granny' while pre-school children will receive 'Ziggy's Halloween wish' We have big book versions in the classroom which we use with the children  to reinforce the Road Safety message . For more information on Go Safe With Ziggy and how this links to the CfE please visit  http://www.gosafewithziggy.com/

Those children who have just joined the Sunflower group will also find    Play@home , an NHS publication on encouraging your child to be active . We hope that you and your children enjoy sharing these books at home .

For the younger children , the Infant and Toddler Forum(ITF) have launched a new factsheet for parents on Physical activities for under 3's     https://www.infantandtoddlerforum.org/c/document_library/get_file?uuid=71acbb49-2898-4356-9eed-489898c800b6&groupId=11528&utm_source=emp&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=itf-sep2013

The ITF is a useful site not only with guidance and fact sheets on nutrition and feeding for under 3's , but an opportunity to discuss issues with other parents . Have a look at https://www.infantandtoddlerforum.org/

A couple of general reminders - please ensure that you close and chain the gates in the garden every time , drive very , very slowly in the carpark , and only park in the bottom carpark- the top carpark is for staff only . Please let us know if your child will not be attending for any reason, and remember to bring a full change of clothes , suitable outdoor gear and soft soled shoes/slippers for indoors each day.

As autumn begins and winter wont be far away(sorry!) we are likely to see a rise in infections and viruses . Please do not bring your child to nursery if they are unwell ,  have  a temperature , or have been given medication (eg Calpol) to reduce a temperature . If your child becomes unwell whilst with us , we will contact you and ask  you to take them home- please do so as soon as possible . We need your co-operation to ensure a  healthy environment for  everyone at Craigton - all the children , their families and the staff - Thank you .

And finally don't forget that we shall be closed on  Monday 23rd September for the Aberdeen holiday .

A reminder  that the nursery will be closed on Monday 23rd September.

Staffing news

Hello everyone ,

We shall be having a small staff move next week . You already know that Julie(sunflowers) and Kelly(buttercups) will be swapping to allow Kelly to move with the new sunflowers and support them in this transition .
Sadly , Michelle(snowdrops) is leaving us next week - Michelle has been with us for many years and we'll all miss her - her last day will be Tuesday 10th September . Best of luck for the future Michelle!
Natalie will be moving to the Snowdrops/Bluebells , Charlotte will be spending time in both the babies and buttercups as needed, and Isabel (buttercups) will now be with us full time  .

Some children will also be moving departments next week so there are a lot of changes in store - please be aware that this can be unsettling for some but we hope that all the children will soon settle and enjoy the new challenges.

The schoolhouse children will be looking at Shapes and Colours this month , with activities , investigations and songs in this theme . The snowdrops and bluebells are also having an interest table - so please bring in anything with a distinct shape or colour for this . Please remember the children will be handling these objects , so they need to be suitable for under 2's - Thank you .

A reminder that we have several children attending the nursery with severe allergies .We work hard to ensure that the environment is safe for all the Craigton children - please help us to do this by not bringing any food or drink into the nursery . Your co-operation here would be very much appreciated .

The sunflowers have been reviewing their daily routine , and  are currently introducing some new ideas and strategies that will give the children more choice  , and to encourage their participation in planning and evaluating routines and activities - we'll let you know more about these soon . As part of this review , the children will be given the opportunity to spend more time out doors - please ensure that your child has suitable outdoor clothing every day . This was discussed at a recent Parent Forum meeting and we will soon be giving clear guidelines to what exactly we mean by that ! So watch this space !

And finally don't forget that the nursery will be closed on Monday 23rd September - Aberdeen holiday

Transitions

Good afternoon everyone ,

Well the summer holidays will be over soon - can you believe it? We have already said goodbye to some of our children starting P1 next week , and more will be going over the next couple of weeks- we all wish you well in your new schools- have fun!

This means that we shall be preparing for a term move here at Craigton . The transition from the schoolhouse to pre-school is a very big step for the children , as they have a new building , staff, routines and curriculum to get to grips with . We have been reviewing this move , and will be introducing a 'staff share' between the buttercups and sunflowers from September . Kelly will be moving to the sunflowers with the children joining this group and will stay with them for the first term. Julie will join the buttercups group at the same time and will then accompany the next group moving in January . We hope that having a familiar adult in their new environment , will help the children to feel more comfortable and make this transition smoother for everyone .

We've made  a change in the sunflowers cloakroom too , getting ready for the new children- pegs and wall files have all changed so don't be alarmed if you cant find your child's peg!
The sunflowers are still looking for small boxes please - anything up to the size of a cereal box would be appreciated .

We'll have more information next week on what all the Craigton children will be looking at over the coming weeks .

Now a reminder : please do not bring ANY food or drink onto nursery premises. We have several children attending with allergies , some potentially life threatening . We work hard to ensure the environment is safe for all the children attending.....please help us to keep it this way . Thank you

I'm still looking for volunteers for the Parents Forum - please let me know asap if you'd like to join us this year .

Photos of the Fun Day are now available to view in the gallery section on the website . This area is password protected.. I cant put the password on here as its public , Please contact me for this and I will  email directly to you . This area will only be accessed by parents and staff at the nursery so we'd really appreciate if photos of all the children could be posted here. If you do not wish your child's image to appear in the gallery , please let me know. This is the first set to be posted on the site - I hope you  like them - we intend  to keep this area updated regularly with pictures of the children busy at Craigton , as well as special events(once we're familiar with the process!) Our thanks to Susan Yule for her continued expert help with this!

And finally :
We shall be closed on the following dates this year  :
Monday 23rd September
Close 6pm Monday 23rd December and re-open 8am Monday 6th January 2014

Friday 2 August 2013

Appeal

Good morning everyone ,

we are continuing to make the most of the lovely summer and spending a lot of time outdoors . The entire nursery has just been in the garden to say goodbye to Leanne - the children(and staff) gave her cards and sang some lovely  songs for her . Leanne has been with us for two years as one of out 4-6 girls , and as relief staff this summer . She has worked in both buildings so knows all the children at Craigton  . She is hoping to start Uni later this year . Best of luck for the future Leanne - we'll all miss you !
This does mean that we have a 4-6 vacancy if you know anyone who'd be interested .

The Sunflowers are appealing for small cardboards boxes please - anything up to the size of a cereal box . They will be using these to make some interactive models to support numeracy and literacy .
The schoolhouse have set up some interest tables following their  HOLIDAY theme , so look out for  requests for specific items from them over the coming weeks .

We have been asked to submit our annual self-evaluation by the Care Inspectorate . Last years submission is now on display in all departments - please have a look , and if you have any suggestions or contributions , please let me know as soon as possible , and I will include them in our evaluation - your input is always welcomed .......on that note.....I am still looking for volunteers for the Parents Forum - I have three members so far , but would like to have 2 or 3 more if possible . Please contact me asap if you'd like to join us .

And finally a reminder not to allow your child to bring food to the nursery or arrive eating . We have several children with severe allergies (in some cases potentially life threatening) , and we work very hard to ensure they do not come into contact with anything that may harm them.
For the same reason(and to keep access clear), please speak to staff about a safe place for car seats/buggies if you need to leave them here - even  a small biscuit crumb/milk spill on these could harm another child .
We'd really appreciate your co-operation in this matter to help keep all the children at Craigton safe . Thank you

Wednesday 24 July 2013

National Play Day 2013

Aberdeen Play Forum invite you to join them to celebrate National Play Day on Wednesday 7th August 10am - 3:30pm in Union Terrace Gardens . There will be an army obstacle course , bouncy castle , face painting , messy play and den building . The event is free, no need to book although please note that all children must be accompanied by an adult . For more information please email   Jennifer.brownlie@aberlour.org.uk

The schoolhouse children will be focusing on holidays over the coming weeks . They will be investigating everything to do with going on holiday - getting ready to go , transport, beaches and sealife , food as well as sports and safety - looks like they'll be busy!

Following recent sporting events , the sunflowers have become very interested in tennis and other racquet sports and cycling (no mention of golf so far!) We have lots of racquets/bats for them and they have been practising their skills .There's also been a lot of denbuilding both indoors and out , and this morning they watched a news clip of the new royal baby leaving hospital and had a lively discussion about his name!
There was also a lot of talk about the thunderstorm last night which clearly fascinated the children .

I'm now looking for volunteers to join our Parent Forum for the coming year . The forum meets 4 times over the school year and I am hoping to have the first meeting mid August . The meetings last about an hour and a half(depending on what's being discussed) and are usually on a Wednesday evening after we close at 6pm . I need at least 1 representative from each department . Please let me know if you'd be interested in joining the forum this year . Thank you

And finally - we have a large amount of unnamed clothing etc unclaimed in both buildings - please have a look and take home anything that belongs to your child - anything not claimed will be donated to charity .
Please also remember to close and chain the gates in the garden everytime and to drive at walking speed in the carpark - Thank you

Friday 19 July 2013

Summertime

Good afternoon all ,

we are certainly making the most of the glorious summer weather at Craigton . All the children have been involved in activities outdoors this week  - we've had water play and bubbles and painting and stories , den building and roleplay , climbing and running , quiet time and sleeping ,  mud pies and picnics and all kinds of everything! There was also some harvesting of strawberries but sadly none of these made it home!
Joanne from Gardening4Kids came this afternoon , and under her direction , the children have  been weeding , mulching and feeding the Craigton orchard which is coming along very well indeed - we've also added some solar lighting there, but you'll need to wait til the autumn to see these in action!
After that , they planted the lettuces that have been grown from seed in the growing area(enriched with our homemade compost) and very enthusiastically watered all the plants (and everything else in sight!) Its been a fun in the sun week at Craigton !

Those of you who have children starting P1 after the summer , will have had a letter from Donna regarding the city school summer bags project . We have now been informed that Cutler school is not participating in this initiative - that will be why some of you have not received these - sorry for any confusion!

Another gentle reminder to return your PS funding applications and sunflowers class photos or payment  as soon as you can please - thank you .

Hope that you all have a lovely weekend - I can smell the BBQ's already :-) dont forget your sunscreen!

staffing news

Good afternoon everyone ,

ans isn't a lovely one ! We are all very much enjoying the beautiful summer at Craigton and hope that you all are too!

A very warm Craigton welcome to Cari Kenrick who joins the bluebells today as an Assistant EYP. Cari came to us last summer for some valuable experience before going to college where she has recently completed her NC in Early Education and Childcare. We are delighted that she now joins us full time , where she hopes to continue her training . Please make yourselves known to her - it can take some time to become familiar with all those new names and faces!

A quick reminder to return PS funding forms , sunflowers photos/payment and school reports as soon as possible- Thank you

Wednesday 3 July 2013

Pre-school funding

Good afternoon everyone ,

All children eligible for PS funding during the session 2013/14 will have received application forms recently. Please complete part A only , and return to me , along with a copy of the child's passport/birth certificate as soon as possible - if you don't apply you will not receive the funding !  All children born between 1st March 2009 to 28th February 2011 are eligible . If your child was born between these dates and you have not received an application , or if you will not be applying for any reason, please let me know.(Please note if your child will be attending a local authority nursery , they will NOT  receive funding)

Please also return sunflower photos or payment for them as soon as you can - Thank you.

Leavers end of year reports are also being distributed at the moment - you will be given two copies . Please sign and return one to us , as these will be sent to your child's school.

I'm sorry that some parents have been disappointed recently that we have not been able to accommodate extra sessions . This is the busiest time of year for us and most sessions are full - we realise that its very frustrating if we cant  offer extra sessions - we will always say yes if we are able to ! If you are requesting extra sessions , its best to ask staff directly when you drop off/pick up - they have each sessions expected numbers and in most cases will be able to give you an immediate answer .

Don't forget to let us know if you're going on holiday over the summer, or if your child wont be attending nursery for any other reason.

And a final reminder that we shall be closed on  Monday 8th July  . I will be on annual leave the rest of that week too , so please note that emails will not be monitored - please call us if you wish to tell us anything . Please leave enquiries regarding attendance , funding , invoices or any cash payments until my return on  Monday 15th July , as the staff are unable to help you with these matters . Thank you .

The weatherman says that from tomorrow(Thursday) we can expect some real summer weather- lets hope he's right!

Wednesday 26 June 2013

Health Alert

Good afternoon everyone ,

I'm sorry to have to tell you that it looks like the tummy bug is back . We've had reports of several children being ill at home- many thanks to parents for informing us !
Please remember that your child cannot return to the  nursery until 48 hours after the last symptoms and be extra vigilant with your hygiene - especially handwashing . Please help us to limit the spread of this - we really don't want anyone's summer holiday ruined by a tummy bug!

The sunflowers are appealing for any old hats you may have at home for their role play area . The children love wearing hats when dressing up and our stock is currently much depleted . All donations gratefully received- thank you .

All the children have been doing lots of gardening  - and very successful its been too! We currently have runner beans , potatoes , lettuce, strawberries and tomatoes growing amazingly well ( partly thanks to our own home-made compost) as well as lots of pretty flowers . There are still some tomato plants on offer in the schoolhouse courtesy of the snowdrops and bluebells- please take one if you'd like to try some gardening at home  . The fruit trees in the orchard are all growing too , and we'll soon be adding some new features in here - so look out for them!
They've also been helping rearrange and clean(yes clean!!!) the outdoor equipment and are still coming up with ideas for us to discuss with Steve the Ranger over the summer - don't forget we'd like your suggestions too - displays in both buildings with room for comments/suggestions .

We'd also  like to give  you advance warning of a fees increase in September . At the request of parents , we have not increased fees for the past two years and costs have continued to rise. Once the reviewed rates have been decided , we'll let you know as soon as possible.

A reminder that the nursery will be closed on Monday 8th July so please don't come that day - you wont get in!

Wednesday 19 June 2013

Parent Conference

Good afternoon ,

The National Parent Forum of Scotland's annual conference will be held on Saturday 5th October , Bishopbriggs Academy , East Dumbartonshire . The conference will feature inspiring seminars for parents/carers and engaging activities for children and young people . The Keynote speaker will be the Scottish Government's Minister for Children and Young People, Aileen Campbell MSP.
All parents/carers are invited to this free event . To register your interest please contact
Lindsay.Jane.Murray@educationscotland.gov.uk      or visit their website in August for booking information
www.parentforumscotland.org

We have been making the most of the recent warm(ish) weather and spending a great deal of time outdoors . Plants(and weeds!) are flourishing, and the children are having a great time looking after their plants  . The snowdrops and bluebells have had a very successful tomato planting project - some of these are now in a mini greenhouse outside the schoolhouse , whilst yet more are in the conservatory - parents are welcome to take these home if you wish , and plant them in your own gardens- please see Ingrid if you'd like to have one. Continuing our gardening theme , Jo from Gardening4Kids will be visiting the sunflowers on Friday with more gardening activities- I'm sure she'll be delighted with the progress of her previous classes.

We are still looking for your ideas for our outdoor area improvements - we are hoping that Stephen the Ranger will be visiting us over the summer , and we've had lots of suggestions from staff and children . There are displays  in both buildings for this  - please add any suggestions you may have - we cant promise to implement them all , but we'll certainly take all comments into account .

Don't forget to ensure that all children have suitable outdoor clothing, suncream and a hat , and a full change of clothing every day . All items need to be clearly named/initialled please- its impossible to keep track of unnamed items . Also , please don't allow your child to bring in toys/precious objects/costumes from home unless asked to do so for show and tell/special events . These treasures invariably get 'borrowed'/lost/broken and this can cause great distress .

On that note - its dressing up day on Monday 24th June- that's next week- the theme this month is 'A day at the Beach' so come dressed as anything beach related- looking forward to seeing the fruits of your imagination!

Application forms have been issued to all children eligible for Pre-school funding over the coming school year 2013/14 . Please complete Part A only and return it to me , along with  a copy of your child's birth cert/passport as soon as possible .
Please also return payment for sunflowers photos asap - or the photos if you do not wish to keep them - Thank you

Staff news

Good afternoon everyone ,

I'm very pleased to tell you that we have a new member of staff starting next week . Isabel Pando Acedo will be joining the buttercups on Monday . Isabel has previously worked with children with additional needs in her native Spain , and is really looking forward to getting to know you all . Please introduce yourselves to her - it can take quite some time to become familiar with all those names and faces! And welcome to the team Isabel - we're very happy to have you with us !

Hope you all have  a lovely weekend

Thursday 13 June 2013

Thank you

Huge thanks to all of you who came along to the Sunflowers Sports and Graduation yesterday . It was wonderful to see so many parents , grandparents , aunties and uncles helping to make it such an enjoyable occasion . I hope that you all enjoyed it as much as we did .
The children had great fun- especially with the water balloons! Most of the time they kept to the lanes and hardly any cheating at all:-) The highlight for us though , were probably the parents races - well done to all you willing volunteers! Its your participation that make our events and we thank you for that .

As I said at the graduation , its an emotional time for us as well as you , but we are confident that the children leaving us to start school this year are all ready to face the challenges of 'big' school , and we are proud to have contributed to their development. We wish you all a wonderful and happy time .

We are all overwhelmed by the very generous gift from the parents of those children. Its incredibly kind and thoughtful of you and hugely appreciated . The staff are already very excited at the prospect of a night out and discussions are well underway! (loved the card too!) Its not often that I'm lost for words but that did it yesterday :-)  Thank you all very much .

Today is a terribly sad day for us as we say goodbye to Catherine . We would like to organise a tribute to give to her family . Along with other settings , we will be collecting money to give to Catherine's husband , that we hope can go towards a trip to France , so the children can spend time with her family . We are also asking anyone who wishes , to write comments or memories of Catherine to pass onto her children . We hope that this will help them in the future to realise what a wonderful , kind, loving and generous woman their mother was , and how many lives she touched . I have already had some very touching emails from parents- some hadn't met Catherine , but their children had spoken of her with affection. We shall make a comment box for this , and all your contributions will be greatly appreciated . It can be one line or reams...every one will be a precious memory for her children .

Sports Day is on!

Good morning everyone ,

Although its not looking too bright at the moment , the forecast is for clearer weather this afternoon . So we have decided to go ahead with Sports Day . If the weather is poor this afternoon , we may have to abandon the sports , but will still go ahead with the graduation indoors . We'd rather not postpone til next week as we do appreciate how difficult it can  be to arrange for time off work........ and it could well rain that day too- don't you just love scottish summers!

So we'll see you all at 3pm today - with your brollies!

Catherine

It is with a total  sense of disbelief and utter shock that I have to inform you all of the tragic death of Catherine Welsh in a car accident yesterday (Tuesday)morning .

Catherine had been coming to Craigton Lodge for 8 years to lead her hugely popular French activity classes with the sunflowers . She always had a smile on her face , was endlessly patient  and became part of the Craigton family .We were delighted for Catherine and her husband on the arrival of their son 4 years ago , and their daughter earlier this year.  Our thoughts and deepest sympathy go out to them at this dreadful time .

We have not discussed this with the children - however , many of the staff have been upset today and some children may have noticed this.

Catherine was a lovely person - warm , caring , intelligent and had a genuine interest in every child at the nursery. We will all miss her.

Thank you!

Hello everyone ,

A HUGE thank you to you all for coming along to our FunDay on Saturday . Its was wonderful to see so many people there- I hope that you all enjoyed the afternoon as much as we did . Also a big thank you to our organising committee - Julie , Kelly and Nicole who did  a fantastic job(especially with the weather!) , all the staff for their time and enthusiasm , and to all the Craigton children and parents for your delicious baking  and all the other donations for the day - its is hugely appreciated!

The raffle was very popular , with  many happy people going home clutching their prizes ....but some were unclaimed on the day . I have prizes for the following in my office , so please come along and collect them.
Meya Sakapaji , Phoebe Strachan , Callum Balfour , Jack Masson , Georgia Woods , Isla Gerrard and Megan Owers .

I am delighted to tell you that your efforts were extremely successful and we raised an astonishing £903.72 for our Staff Development Fund . This fund is to support staff to gain formal qualifications to meet registration requirements, when unable to access other funding . It is vital in ensuring that all our staff continue to update their knowledge and skills , and  continue to provide the best care and education possible for your children. As far as I am aware , we are the only nursery in the area who have this level of support and partnership with parents and this is something we are very proud of . Thank you all so much :-)

And the fun doesn't end there......... next week - Wednesday 12th June 3pm is the Sunflowers Sports Day - all sunflowers participate and they love to have a crowd to cheer them on so please come along . There will also be a short graduation ceremony for those children leaving us to start P1 this year. This is always well attended but please note that seating is very limited , so be prepared to stand, or bring a rug to sit on.   Be warned that there is parent participation too, so make sure you have  your running shoes on! News

Good afternoon everyone ,

We have today taken delivery of Bookbug Pirate Packs for all 3yr old children at the nursery . The Bookbug programme encourages parents and carers to share books and songs with their children from birth . There is also evidence that early book sharing has significant benefits for child development and impacts on attachment , speech and language development and infant mental health . These packs have been distributed to all eligible children today - they will be in your child's file - please take them home and enjoy sharing them together . For more information on the programme , please visit   http://www.scottishbooktrust.com/bookbug

We have registered with Leaning Through Landscapes to take part in National School Grounds Week(10th-14th June) and will be doing as much as possible outdoors that week . This ties in well with our current review of the outdoor area. We have consulted the children and have had some really interesting suggestions from them. Displays of what we have  at the moment are in each building - please have a look and tell us your ideas too- we cant promise to implement everything , but we'd really like to have your contributions to this.

Staying outdoors , Joanne from Gardening4Kids will be visiting this week , This months  session will be 'Seeds and their Needs'- the children really enjoy Joanne's visits as well as looking after their plants in between visits- we have  been very busy in the growing areas recently . We have planted potatoes , tomatoes , runner beans  , pumpkins and the strawberry patch is thriving too- we've even noticed signs of growth in the orchard too- looks like spring may finally be here!

A reminder that our FunDay is less than two weeks away so you need to buy your tickets asap. Come along on Saturday 1st June 12-3pm for fun and games and BBQ - bring all your friends , and lots of carrier bags to carry home all that lovely homebaking! MayDay!

Good afternoon everyone ,

we have all been very busy at Craigton , getting outside as much as possible recently . We have been digging out the growing beds and planting vegetables and flowers . The older children have  been helping to clean the outdoor equipment too - and a great job they've made of  it  too! There has been building of bonfires , fishing boats and making fishing rods . All the children have been out and about in the village as well - there have been walks to the library , post office , parks and the old railway line .
Please make sure that your child is properly equipped for outdoors every day . Its still quite cold so they need warm , waterproof clothing ...and as we are eagerly anticipating the warmer weather , its time to bring in suncream and hats too.

Fred , our handyman , has also been busy in the garden . He has fitted new catches and chains on all the gates(please make sure you use these every time) has repaired paths damaged by the winter weather , and will be maintaining the fences over the next few weeks- there's a lot of fencing so it takes a while!
We are looking to really make  the most of out outdoor area this year and have been talking to the children about what they'd like to have. We've had some very interesting discussions and some amazing ideas(not all of them practical!) Suzanne has created a plan of the outdoor area , along with the children's ideas , and we'd like yours too . These are on display in both buildings - please have  a look and share your thoughts with us - we cant promise to include everyone's suggestions , but we'll do what we can . We have Steven from the Ranger service helping us with the practical side of this so we're hoping for some great things .

Its Child Safety Week 24th-30th June and a new website has been launched to encourage as may people as possible to get  involved- the message is 'You don't need to be superhuman to be a  Safety Hero' for more information, ideas and activities please visit
 http://www.childsafetyweek.org.uk/get-involved/be-a-safety-hero/

This next bit is a secret ............Alison(buttercups) and her fiancĂ© Leigh are getting married on 18th May . Michelle(snowdrops) is organising a collection for a gift for them so if anyone would like to contribute , please see Michelle asap.......but don't tell Alison!

Other important dates: Family FunDay - Saturday 1st June 12-3pm . Tickets for this are now on sale in both buildings - we are also accepting donations for the raffle which will be drawn on the day .
Sunflowers Sports Day/Graduation: Wednesday 12th June 3pm(19th June alternative if rained off)

Sunflowers class photos : Wednesday 5th June 9:30am . All sunflowers need to be here for this please . If your child doesn't normally attend on a Wednesday morning , please bring them along promptly by 9:30am ready to be photographed . You will need to stay and take them home afterwards . Our photographer , Linda has  a very tight schedule , so if you're not here on time you wont be in the photo! Please note , as this is such a busy day , we are unable to offer extra sessions that day .

One of our Craigton mums, Lesley Simpson , will be doing a sponsored walk along the Old Deeside railway line , on Sunday 2nd June to raise funds for the Neurosurgery Ward 40 at ARI  . Lesley recently underwent major  back surgery and is currently going through a long , slow recovery . In her own words ' I want to give something back to the people who helped me through a very difficult time - a box of chocolates isn't enough.' So even though just a few weeks ago she wasn't able to walk at all , she will be doing her 'Sponsored Wobbly Walk' to say thank you . (She's also promised a donation to our  Staff Development Fund- but we think it should all go to the ARI!) If you'd like to support her in this very courageous effort , there is a sponsor form on display in the Sunflowers entrance area - please help her to raise lots for her very worthy cause- best of luck Lesley!

Don't forget that the nursery will be closed on Monday 6th May - we know you all love being here(as do we) but please don't come that day cos you wont get in! I shall be on leave all next week too(lucky me!) returning on Monday 13th May . Please note that emails will not be answered during this time - please call the nursery if you need to tell/ask us anything, and please wait until my return for any cash payments - the staff are unable to accept cash .

Enjoy the long weekend!

Health news

Hello everyone ,

I had an email today from the Infant and Toddler Forum , who are contacting all members to let them know that the British Dental Health Association have issued a warning regarding young  children drinking too much fruit juice - this is leading to increases in dental decay in pre-school children.
The ITF have issued a factsheet and tips for parents https://www.infantandtoddlerforum.org/c/document_library/get_file?uuid=4bec6038-c2e3-43a4-b74b-63d63b059652&groupId=11528&utm_source=emp&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=itf-apr2013

While on the subject of health , can I please remind you that if your child is unwell they should not come to nursery . Bringing children back to nursery before they are fully well makes their  recovery much longer and they will be more likely to pick up any other virus/infection as their immune system will be lowered. If your child has been prescribed antibiotics , please do not bring them straight back to us after the doctors appointment - these medicines need time to take effect- at least overnight . We do appreciate that it can be  difficult for working parents , but these viruses/infections can be highly contagious and affect not just your child but all  children at the nursery , their families and the staff . The NHS guidance for children in daycare even for a cold (on display on noticeboards) is that they do not attend until fully recovered- please help us to keep everyone as healthy as we can by following these. The  health and safety of all the children is our primary concern - if we ask you to take your child home , or refuse admittance , it is because we don't think they are well enough to be here or they are returning before  the recommended exclusion times .

Grounds for Learning , the organisation who donated the lovely fruit tress for our orchard , have been in touch with us. They would like us to send pictures of the progress to be posted on their website . Letters and permission forms for this have been sent out to you if your child appears in any of these - please return to us asap- thank you . Once on the site , I'll post a link .

And speaking of websites - our new site is now online although its not totally finished - we will be making some adjustments to it over the next few weeks , but the basic site is now in place . Please have a look and tell us what you think   http://www.craigtonlodgenursery.co.uk/

Its been sometime since I've mentioned Easy Fundraising so here we go........... please sign up at   www.easyfundraising.org.uk . Once registered , each time you shop online , you can raise funds for us . It doesn't cost you a penny - in fact there are lots of special offers and discounts so you could even save money . There are hundreds of retailers participating so you're bound to use at least one of them .You can download their find and remind tool which will tell you when you're visiting a participating site so you don't even need to remember to log in. Its a really, really  easy way to raises funds . We currently have 19 supporters who have raised over £500 in the last 2 years just by shopping online- please join us !

Did someone mention fundraising???????? A reminder that tickets are now on sale for our family Funday on Saturday 1st June 12-3pm . We're also now accepting donations for the raffle- anything you can spare will be greatly appreciated!

And finally don't forget that the nursery will be closed on Mayday - Monday 6th May
