Merry Christmas

Festive greetings to you all!

A huge thank you to those of you(and there were many!) who came along to enjoy the sunflowers Christmas concert this afternoon . The premier production of 'Wriggly Nativity' was a huge hit !

The children and staff worked very hard to put on their show , and it was all worth it . Our thanks must also go to costume and props designers(that's you) , and the hours of home practice that were put in (you again!). But most of all a huge thank you to the audience .........I think it was the busiest yet , and it was wonderful to see so many grandparents, aunties and uncles , cousins and siblings there as well as parents.  We always love having visitors at Craigton , and we are delighted that so many of you were here to share our Christmas celebrations. And for joining in with the songs(well most of you !) . We hope you enjoyed yourselves as much as we did .

Thank you also for your donations to the hamper raffle - we had so much that we were able to give two prizes this year ! The draw was made by our two narrators , Poppy and Callum B - the hamper was won by Fergus(buttercups),  and the case of wine by Jack (sunflowers). Both may be too young to appreciate the contents , but I'm sure their parents will :-)  and we raised just under £50.00 for the SDFund - thank you :-)

Barring any breaking news , this is likely to be the last post on the blog before we close . Id like to thank each and every one of you for your continued support and involvement  with the nursery during the past year - it really does make a difference to the whole setting.

Mrs Mackay is in Australia at the moment , spending Christmas with her son  who moved there earlier this year . Now I know that we're all slightly envious , but believe me , she is devastated to miss the celebrations at Craigton . She has asked me to pass on her best wishes to you all for a Merry Christmas and  a very Happy New Year . As do we all :-)

Enjoy the festive season and the break- we shall!

Christmas at Craigton

Good afternoon everyone ,

A reminder to buy your tickets for the Christmas raffle NOW! This will be drawn tomorrow after the Sunflowers star studded seasonal spectacular !!!!!!!!!!!(oh yes it will!) .
This hugely popular event takes place 3pm tomorrow(Wednesday) and everyone is invited to join us . Please ensure that  all the performers(sunflowers) are here by 2:45pm  so we can begin promptly at 3pm - thank you . I have just seen the final rehearsal , and you are all in for a real treat!

Please note that this event is always very well attended - its standing room only . There will be grandparents, as well as parents with infants - please give up your seat if you are fit and strong! Also , many will be taking photos /recording the show - if you need to stand to do this , please move to the sides of the room so that others can view the live performance - thank you .

And as if that wasn't excitement enough- on Thursday(wait for it...........) Santa will be here!! I know - I can barely believe it myself but its true! The Craigton Christmas party is taking place  2-4pm on Thursday and we are expecting our VVVVVVVVIP between 3 and 3:30pm .  You may already know that Santa is quite experienced with young children, and appreciates that some can be a little shy. In the schoolhouse , he sits in the cosy den , and those children who wish to meet him can do so . He doesn't go into the rooms , so if your child is a little overwhelmed by  the Santa experience(as many are) please don't worry - they only need to see him if they want to . The sunflowers is  a different story - Santa is usually questioned relentlessly regarding flying reindeer , thrust boosters on his sleigh , and present capacity :-)

A huge thank you  from all the staff for your lovely cards and gifts - its very kind and thoughtful, and we do appreciate it :-)

Finally , dont foget that we shall close at 6pm on Friday and re-open 8am Thursday 3rd January

Inspection

Good afternoon everyone ,

Yesterday we had an unannounced  inspection by the Care Inspectorate . I am unable to go into much detail until the report has been issued , but I can tell you that the day went  well , and we are very happy with the feedback given , and the grades awarded . I hope I shall  be able to give you more information on this next month.
Id like to thank all of you who returned questionnaires before the inspection , and  those who spoke to the inspector yesterday . Your comments and support are very much appreciated . We have also been randomly selected to give feedback on the inspection as part of the Care Inspectorate's quality assurance system  so those of you who did speak to the inspector yesterday , will have yet another questionnaire in your child's file -  please complete this and return  asap - thank you .

In particular , Id like to thank each and every member of staff at Craigton Lodge . The following is taken from our self evaluation submitted earlier this year(on display in each department) its under QS 3.3 which is about the quality of staffing :
'My staff work very hard in what are becoming increasingly demanding roles. They are always keen to extend their knowledge and update their skills and approach this with commitment and enthusiasm. Much of this training/CPD is done in their own time as staffing levels often do not allow time off work for this. I believe this demonstrates the utmost professionalism and dedication. I am very ,very proud of my staff- their commitment to the setting, the children in their care and their families never flags and they make the nursery a warm and welcoming place for all'
...........and I mean every word- Well done everyone :-)

So now we can really look forward to our Christmas celebrations next week . The Sunflowers concert is at 3pm on Wednesday 19th , and the party is 2-4pm on Thursday 20th . Don't forget that those children who would normally go home after lunch are welcome to stay until after both these exciting events .
Tickets are on sale for the Xmas raffle which will be drawn on Wednesday after the concert . Please get these now ....don't leave it til you come on Wednesday as last minute preparations will be under way- thank you (still accepting donation for this too!)

And a final reminder that we will be closing at 6pm Friday 21st December and re-open 8am Thursday 3rd January 2013 .

Staffing news

Congratulations to Chantel(sunflowers) who has completed her trail and induction period , and is now a permanent member of our team at Craigton Lodge . We're very glad to have her with us !

Sadly though , we will soon be saying goodbye to Roz(buttercups) . Roz has been very busy volunteering with support groups as well as working here , and the organisation she has been with have offered her a fulltime position - we're not surprised! Roz will be with us until the Xmas break , and all of us at Craigton wish her the very best for the future .

The weather has resulted in last minute cancellations for various training events , however staff have managed to attend the following recently :
Fitstars - fun and fitness programme for under 8s
Risk/Benefit Assessment
Pre-Birth to 3 - Positive outcomes for Scotland's families
Under 5's seminar
There is no further training planned until after the Xmas break (as we're all a little busy!)

Santas helpers finally made it through the snow to collect the mountain of  gifts for the Giving Tree today - once again a HUGE thank you to each and every one of you- your generosity is immensely appreciated :-)

If you're still feeling full of festive spirit - don't forget we're asking for donations for the Xmas Hamper which will be raffled after the sunflowers concert on 19th December .

Also a quick reminder to register at   easyfundraising.org    so every time you shop online , you'll raise funds for the nursery.......I'm sure that there's a fair bit of online shopping being done at the moment!  Thank you .

Nursery/P1 enrolment

Good afternoon everyone ,

We have just received some leaflets from Aberdeen City Council regarding registration for nursery places for the next academic year 2013/14 . These will be distributed to all children who are eligible for  a  nursery place . Please note that the dates for registration are: 14th Jan 2013 to 11th Feb 2013 . You will need to go along to your chosen school along with your child's birth certificate to apply .
We don't have any specific information about enrolling your child for P1 , but this usually happens around the same time but for one week only (normally 2nd week in January) - Id suggest you contact the school directly if your child is due to start school next year .
Please note that if your child attends a local authority  nursery , they will not receive PS funding at any other centre. The funding is instead of  a school nursery place - your child may of course attend another centre , but the place will not be funded . Please call/email if you have any questions about this - it can be rather confusing !

As I write this , I can hear the sunflowers rehearsing  songs from their Christmas concert and its started to snow - very festive ! :-)

Weather warning

Hello everyone ,

well winter has really arrived now ! The forecast for tonight is snow , followed by freezing temperatures(-4) . That means that all the slush/rain that's around just now will be ice by morning- so please be aware that we may need to close the carpark  until we can make it safe . Please drive and walk very carefully !

Every year I am touched by your generosity for the Giving Tree Appeal - but this year the response has been amazing! My office looks like Santa's grotto- (yes Santa helpers have not yet been to collect so you still have time if you've forgotten to hand in a gift !)  Your gifts really will make a huge difference to so many children in this area - it will bring Christmas joy to those that need it most . As they are unable to thank you themselves , may I do so on their behalf . Its been a difficult year for everyone , but you have all taken the time and effort and given a little extra to a child you will probably never meet - and that is the true Christmas spirit - Thank you so much :-)

A reminder of the up coming celebrations :  The sunflowers Xmas concert is at 3pm Wednesday 19th  December (all sunflowers will be taking part and rehearsals are already underway!) ) Xmas Party 2-4pm Thursday 20th December(all sunflowers and buttercups are invited- the snowdrops and bluebells have their own more restrained  celebrations for those that normally attend) Please note as this is such a busy time , we are unable to offer extra sessions that week .

We are also asking for donations for the Christmas Hamper raffle which will take place after the sunflowers concert on Wednesday 19th . Tickets for this will be on sale soon .

The nursery will close at 6pm Friday 21st December and re-open 8 am Thursday 3rd January 2013.

If you're planning a clearout before Santa arrives with lots of goodies ,  don't forget that we have a charity bin out side the preschool building - so you dont even need to go to the shop to drop it off !

Wrap up warm!

Craigton roundup

Hello everyone ,

we have all been very busy at Craigton recently - the children celebrated Diwali last week with lots of investigations and activities linked to the Hindu New Year and Festival of Lights . We have been tidying up the garden and getting ready for winter , keeping the wild bird feeders stocked up to encourage the birds to visit us . There has also  been a lot of outdoor play( we're making the most of it while we can) and the sunflowers have been making plans for an orchard with some helpful suggestions from Jo from Gardening 4 Kids !
Please ensure that your child has suitable outdoor clothing(including boots, hats and gloves) and also soft soled shoes/slippers for indoors- those boots are very hard on little feet all day ! Please also provide a full change of clothes each day your child attends - we do have a small supply of  emergency clothing here , but most children prefer to wear their own. Can I remind you to ensure that all clothing has your child's name/initials on - its very hard to keep track otherwise - please check the lost property boxes too! Thank you.
Coming up :
We shall be celebrating St.Andrew's Day( Patron saint of Scotland) on Friday- there will be tartan and shortbread and poems and music and haggis galore!
There are still a few Giving Tree gift tags left - please take one and get the gifts back to us by this coming Monday(3rd Dec) when Santa's helpers will collect them .
Advent begins on Saturday(1st Dec)  hope you're all ready with your calendars!
The Sunflowers Xmas Concert will be on Wednesday 19th December 3pm, and the Xmas Party on Thursday 20th December 2-4pm .
We are asking for donations for the Xmas raffle which will be drawn after the concert on 19th Dec. Tickets for this will be on sale next week .
And finally a reminder that the nursery will close at 6pm on Friday 21st December and re-open at 8am Thursday 3rd January 2013 .

Don't forget to register at   www.easyfundraising.org.uk - then all that online shopping you do will help to raise funds too. You will also have access to special offers and discounts from hundreds of retailers so it could save you some money too!  Thank you .

New book launch

Hello everyone ,

One of our Craigton grandparents has just published a new children's book . Kathryn Green has written two previous books which we have been very popular in the nursery . Her new book 'Don't Eat Me' is the story of a little acorn who wants to grow into an oak tree . It follows the changes in the countryside with the seasons , and is beautifully illustrated with lots to look at and discuss on each page . We have been using these books in the nursery this week and they are a big hit with the children .

We have some of these for sale(on display in Pre-school) for £5.99 , and Kathryn has very kindly offered a donation to our staff development fund for each book sold - would make great stocking fillers!!!!!!!!

We are also appealing for donations for our Christmas raffle . Tickets for this will go on sale in December and the draw will be made after the sunflowers concert on Wednesday 19th December.

If you're planning a clear out to make room for all the lovely goodies that Santa will bring , don't forget that we have  a charity bin (British Heart Foundation)  at the pre-school entrance.

And finally a reminder that we shall be closing 6pm Friday 21st December and reopen 8am Thursday 3rd Jan 2013

Culter Christmas Lights switch on

Good afternoon everyone ,

One of our parents , James Farquhar is organising the Xmas Lights this year and has the following message for you all

The ‘Switch On Event’ for Culter Christmas Lights takes place on Saturday 24th November at Culter Village Hall from 4-6pm. Please come along and enjoy the celebrations.
There will be a visit from Santa, carol singing accompanied by The Granite City Brass Band, mulled wine and mince pies and also a magic show for the kids. Entry is free.
We are hoping that children will come along on the day and join in the carol singing.

Sounds like a great event so please go along and support the local community efforts - thank you .

And talking of the winter festival......... dont forget to hand in your Giving Tree gifts by Monday 3rd December , when Santa's helpers will collect them .

Following the parents evening last week , there does seem to be a little uncertainty about the CfE , and what this means in the nursery . The CfE is based on the development of  each child as an individual, to offer in- depth learning opportunities and adult support to allow each child to achieve their full potential .  Full details of the experiences and outcomes of CfE are on display in the sunflowers room , and you can get some really good information about it at   http://bexcellent.org.uk/.
We have always , and continue to provide opportunities for learning , rather than 'teaching' . Research across the world has shown that children who learn through play in early years rather than formal teaching , are more engaged in their learning at school , and achieve better  results in secondary education .
Best practice in early years settings is to encourage active , engaged and focused leaning - for the child to direct their own learning , with appropriate adult support.
If you do have any questions regarding this , please talk to Suzanne , Donna or myself and we'll do our best to answer !

Cold and frosty morning!

Good morning ,

a big thank you to all of you who made it along to Parent's Evening last night . It was great to see so many parents there , and I hope that you all enjoyed the opportunity to have a good look around and talk to staff about your children . If you took your child's folio home with you , please remember to bring it back !

I was talking to some parents about Childcare Vouchers last night and it appears that many of you missed the previous post regarding the campaign to raise the weekly allowance for £55/week to £75/week . This could mean savings of an extra £300 per parent per year . Below is a link to the petition - please have a look and sign if you'd like to  support the campaign and pass it onto any of your contacts who would be interested - Thank you.                               http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/31669

A big Craigton welcome to Catharine and Rachel who have both just joined us as 4-6 girls . Catharine is in S4 at Cults Academy - she was with us for work experience last month and we liked her so much we asked her to come back! She will be in the Schoolhouse on Fridays . Rachel is in S6 at St.Margaret's and will be in Pre-school on Tuesdays . Both already have experience volunteering with local Rainbows groups and are already getting to know the children .

Other staff have recently attended the following training/CPD:
Fitstars- now being used by sunflowers and buttercups
Outdoor Ranger Training
Children's Mental Health
Risk/Benefit Assessment
Pre-birth to 3- Positive Outcomes for Scotland's children and families
and will be attending before the Xmas break :
REHIS Food Hygiene
Child Protection
Staff Appraisal and Supervision skills
Employers and Managers Forum
Manual Handling

Please remember to take  a Giving Tree gift tag and to return them to us by Monday 3rd December .....and while on the subject of buying gifts..........an other appeal to sign up to   easyfundriasing.org.uk  . If you register as a supporter of Craigton Lodge Nursery , everytime you shop online you will raise a donation for the nursery . If you download their find and remind toolbar(which raises 50p)  , you don't even need to go to  the site as it will tell you when you are visiting a participating retailer . There are hundreds of retailers , including Amazon, ebay, John Lewis, Debenhams etc . So you could raise lots of money just by shopping online and it wont cost you a penny!(though I cant promise the same for your purchases!)

Stay warm !

Giving Tree Appeal

Good morning ,

Many of you will already know that every year we take part in the Giving Tree Appeal . This is a charity appeal for gifts for children in this area who for whatever reason will not be waking up to presents on Christmas morning.

We know that this is a very busy and expensive time for all .....there's cards to be written , frantic searches for the last Peppa Pig outfit/spiderman watch/ furbie/wii game  that just cant be found anywhere,  food that you wouldn't dream of buying at any other time and that nobody eats  , untangling tree lights that you packed away so carefully last time , wrapping  of gifts when you've run out of sellotape , and slowly realising that there is no way you'll get a babysitter the weekend before Christmas ....Yet its always worth it in the end ! When you wake on Christmas morning and see the look of wonder and delight on your children's faces , and spend time with your family and friends , all that effort is rewarded . Ahhhhhhhhhh :-)

But please spare a thought for children in this area who are much less fortunate than your own. Children who may  not be celebrating in the warmth and security of a loving family , and for whom Santa will not come .

There are gift  tags in each department with the name and age of a child. Please take one , wrap an appropriate gift and attach the tag . These need to be returned to us by Monday 3rd December when Santa's helpers will collect them .

Please do this ........you will be giving not just the gift , but some Christmas joy to children who sorely need it ........ And after all , that is really what Christmas is all about . Thank you .

Monday 12 November 2012

Parents Evening

Good afternoon everyone ,

A final reminder that its Parents Evening this Wednesday 14th November 6-7:30pm . Please come along and chat to the staff and other parents - we look forward to seeing you there .

Culter Playgroup are holding a Christmas Fayre in the village hall on Saturday 17th November 1-4pm - there will be games , arts and crafts , a puppet theatre and home bakes -something for everyone there- please go along and support them and get a  head start on your Christmas gifts ! Don't forget too that the following Saturday 24th November is the Christmas lights switch on 4-6pm again at the village hall.

Speaking of Christmas........ the sunflowers Christmas concert will be on Wednesday 19th December at 3pm. This seasonal spectacular is always very well attended - all parents , grandparents , aunties, uncles , brothers and sisters are welcome to  come along . You really don't want  to miss this so please keep the date free . Sunflower parents will be given more information about the arrangements nearer the time.
And that's not all! The Christmas party will be on Thursday 20th December 2-4pm . All sunflowers and buttercups are invited to this , while the snowdrops and bluebells have their own more restrained celebrations for those who normally attend on that day - it can all be rather overwhelming for the very little ones.....I am currency in negotiations with the North Pole PR team , and am confident that a very special visitor will come with gifts for all .Please note that the children attending on the morning should stay for the party , but as it is such a busy time , we are not able to accommodate extra sessions on that day .

A reminder that we encourage all the children and staff at Craigton to reduce, reuse and recycle , so please don't send cards to everyone at nursery .Save a tree and yourselves some money! One card for the whole group is perfect - these will be displayed in the rooms so all the children can see them , and recycled afterwards . Thank you .

After all that excitement , the nursery will close at 6pm on Friday 21st December and reopen 8am Thursday 3rd January 2013 .
And finally , for those of you who are very organised, the nursery will be closed on the following dates  next year :
Easter Monday - 1st April
May Day - 6th May
Aberdeen holiday - 8th July
Aberdeen holiday - 23rd September

Monday 5 November 2012

Safety Notice

Good afternoon everyone,

We've just had a report of a near miss in the carpark as one driver entered at speed . Can I please remind you all to drive at walking speed in the carpark. At drop off and pickup times there will often be children in the carpark , and as its now dark so early you may not see them in time , so please go very , very slowly .

To try to prevent congestion here too , we're asking that everyone reverse parks from now on - Thank you all for your co-operation .

A reminder that its Parents Evening next week - Wednesday 14th November 6pm to 7:30pm - we all look forward to seeing you there .

Thursday 25 October 2012

Me again!

Since the blog post this morning , we have taken delivery of questionnaires from the Care Inspectorate . These will be randomly distributed across all departments . If you receive one , please complete  and return it directly to the Care Inspectorate in the pre-paid envelope provided . These questionnaires are confidential , so please do not return them to us . If you give permission , the Care Inspectorate may also contact you directly for further information .
This does mean that it is likely that we will have an inspection soon. If so , the inspectors will wish to talk to parents and children and your comments may be included in the inspection report , so don't be surprised if you're approached by someone with a clipboard!

Thank you

Craigton Roundup

Hello everyone ,

A quick update on what the Craigton children have been doing recently .

The schoolhouse children have been continuing their  literacy and numeracy theme , with lots of opportunities for songs, rhymes and stories to encourage early language skills and become more familiar with number and counting as well as early maths concepts such as sorting and comparison(bigger , smaller , less more etc) They are also enjoying autumn with all that brings as well as getting ready for Halloween - a reminder that all the children are welcome to come to nursery Monday , Tuesday and Wednesday next week in costume , and to bring in homemade lanterns for all to see .

The sunflowers are continuing their trains/transport interest - this just keeps on going ! Please have a look at the floorbook on display in the entrance area - there's lots of children's comments and ideas in there . We have an appeal for large  clear containers (preferably with lids) in this department . Large sweetie/coffee jars or similar would be perfect . These will be used for storage , but enable the children to see whats in the jars .
Over the coming weeks the sunflowers will be focusing on two specific area of the CfE .
Health and Wellbeing 0-19a- In everyday activity and play I explore and make choices to develop my learning and interests. I am encouraged to use and share my experiences
Social Studies 0-09a - I have experimented with imaginative ways such as modelling and drawing to represent the world around me , the journeys  I make and the different ways I can travel .
For more information on the CfE and the experiences and outcomes , please visit   www.bexcellent.org.uk

We will also be introducing inspirational quotes throughout the nursery ..... these can be from anyone as long as they have some relevance to early years- politicians, athletes , actors, singers , musicians , scientists , writers , artists, designers - anyone at all  . The pre-school building  are starting with ' All children are artists ' Pablo Picasso. We hope that these quotes and the people who made them , will encourage investigation of lots of different people , cultures and disciplines as well as discussion about the actual quotes.
If you have a favourite quote that would be appropriate , please let us know  and we'll include it . eg . one of mine is 'A person is a person , no matter how small'  Dr .Seuss - smart man ! In case you're not familiar , that's from 'Horton Hears a Who!:-)

A reminder   that its Parents Evening on Wednesday 14th November  - please come along and find out what your children do here all day - its also a great opportunity to meet other parents .

And finally don't forget the clocks go back one hour this weekend and there's not much time left to get your pumpkins!

Health Alert

Hello again ,

Just to let you know that we have today had a confirmed case of chickenpox in the nursery . Please be aware of the symptoms - usually small spots/blisters on the skin , may be accompanied by a temperature . Some children can be very unwell with chickenpox , and others just uncomfortable from the itchy spots .If you think your child may have chickenpox , please visit a doctor and keep them off nursery until no new spots are appearing , and existing spots have scabbed over - usually about 5 days after the first spots appear
Full details can be found at
http://www.patient.co.uk/health/chickenpox-in-children-under-12

Staffing news

Good morning everyone ,

just to let you know that from next week , Kelly (EYP bluebells) will also be spending some time with the buttercups . Kelly will be joining the buttercups Monday , Tuesday and Wednesdays , and with the bluebells Thursday and Fridays . We hope that this will give Kelly the opportunity to extend her knowledge and skills with a different age group , and will  also be helpful for the children  when they move departments , as there will be a familiar adult in their new room . Kelly is very much looking forward to spending time with the buttercups , and getting you know you all :-)

There will be a Parent Forum meeting next week (Tuesday) so please let any member know if there's anything you'd like raised - this years Forum members are : Dawn Blessing , Erin Brown , Hazel Farquhar , Claire Molloy and Alison Siggins .

Don't forget the clocks go back this weekend so you'll have an extra hour to get your Halloween costumes ready !

I've also been told that 'Arctic conditions' are expected by the end of this week! A reminder that in  severe conditions some of our staff are unable to get here ( schools closed , public transport disrupted, roads closed)- if this is the case we may need to close early , so please ensure that we have up to date contact numbers . Also , please avoid using the carpark in heavy snow as it makes it almost impossible to clear(and you'll get stuck!) - be aware that if there is snow around , the carpark may be closed so drive SLOWLY as the chain will be across the drive- Thank you .

Monday 22 October 2012

Happy Monday !

Hello everyone ,

The sunflowers have re-introduced HomeBooks- these will be going home with your child at the end of their nursery week . Please let us know what you've been doing over the weekend- a couple of lines and a photo or drawing by your child is all that's needed - we're not expecting a novel! The children love sharing their experiences outside the nursery with the other children and staff and these books give them all the opportunity to tell us all about home . Please feel free to decorate and personalise these books - anything that will make them individual and recognisable to your child .

Our handyman Fred has fitted a new superduper extra strong gate between the garden and the carpark - this gate gets a lot of traffic and hard use so we thought it was time for a new one ! Its been baffling some parents today as the catch is different - you have been warned :-) The ongoing maintenance continues - Decorator  Dave has recently painted the children's bathroom and the entrance area in the schoolhouse and will be continuing when he can - he's a very busy man!

As the evenings (and mornings) are getting darker , the carpark and outdoor building lights are now on - please be careful in the dark , particularly if its frosty! Don't forget that the clocks go back this weekend so it will be darker earlier.....just in time for ghosts , goblins and ghouls to come out and celebrate Halloween . We shall be having Halloween activities on Monday , Tuesday and Wednesday next week - all children are welcome to come in costume and to bring homemade lanterns into nursery- we'd love to see your handiwork! Please leave the sweeties at home though .

A date for your diary .......Parents Evening will be on Wednesday 14th November 6pm to 7:30pm . This is an informal evening , where you will have the chance to talk to staff about your child's progress , see some of what they do when they're here , and meet other parents . Its a drop in evening - you're not expected to be here for an hour and a half! Just come along when you can - we'll all look forward to seeing you there . You'll even be offered a glass of wine too!

Thank you to those who have returned the children's christmas card orders - these have now been sent away and should be back in the next two weeks..........speaking of cards- those of you (and I know there are many ) who are super organised and already getting ready for the big event(YES in October!) PLEASE don't send christmas cards to all the children/staff at nursery- we are very keen on reducing waste and recycling , so please just send one card to the whole group - these will then be displayed so all the children can see them. Thankyou

Back to October now -  please visit the link below for information on Active Aberdeen Festival which will be taking place from today 22nd October to 18th  November . This initiative is part of  Games for Scotland, a Scottish Government plan to ensure a lasting legacy for all from the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.   There are lots of activities for all ages across the city - and many of them are free - have a look

Keep warm !!!!!!!!!!

Good afternoon everyone ,

as I write this its -1degree so it looks like winter has come early this year ! The evenings will soon be getting darker too as the clocks go back next weekend (Sunday 28th October) - can you believe it??????

We continue to spend time outside whenever possible , so please ensure that the children have suitable warm , waterproof outdoor gear , as well as some soft soled shoes/slippers for indoors - thank you .

The sunflowers enjoyed a visit from Gwen and Mike from Fitstars today - they were encouraged to use their physical skills in a series of adventures , jumping and hopping , running and throwing , squatting and clapping whilst building , working in teams and even exploring space! An action packed morning indeed!

Donna and Alison recently attended an information session by  Fitstars  which led to the invitation to visit us today . Other training attended by staff recently included :
NHS play@home information and training
Allergy information and Epipen use
CfE Expressive arts outside and CfE Science outdoors- the training schedule  for this year  has just got under way and there will be lots more over the coming months.

And finally some new initiatives : the Royal Scottish National Orchestra(RSNO) have created a recording featuring Scottish songs, nursery rhymes and classical works to help new parents communicate , rest and play with their babies . Each child born in Scotland between 15th October 2012 and 14th October 2013 will receive a CD of this recording .
The new National Parenting Strategy has been launched and can be viewed at http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Publications/2012/10/4789

Health notice

Hello again ,

Just to let you know that we have today had a confirmed case of chickenpox in the nursery . Please be aware of the symptoms - usually small spots/blisters on the skin , may be accompanied by a temperature . Some children can be very unwell with chickenpox , and others just uncomfortable from the itchy spots .If you think your child may have chickenpox , please visit a doctor and keep them off nursery until no new spots are appearing , and existing spots have scabbed over - usually about 5 days after the first spots appear

Its Autumn!

Good afternoon everyone ,

we are continuing to enjoy the lovely autumnal sunshine and making the most of it . The children have been outdoors today , planting some winter flowers in pots and watching the bubbles streaming from the bubble machine , as well as looking at the leaves falling (and helping to tidy them up!) - thanks to you all for bringing outdoor gear for the children - it makes a great difference to their enjoyment when they are suitably dressed!

We have some new faces with us this week at Craigton - Hailey and Vincent are 2nd year nursing students who have been with the sunflowers , and Catharine is in the  schoolhouse on work experience from Cults Academy . We are always happy to offer placements to students and hope that they find their time with us enjoyable as well as informative . We also have Rachel with us on Wednesdays in the buttercups until mid November- this is also work experience with Banchory Academy .

Alas there have also been some unwanted visitors - the return of the winter tummy bug has come early this year , and  there has also been a confirmed  case of  hand, foot and mouth . Please note that we have a 48 hour exclusion policy for tummy bugs - children cannot return to nursery until 48 hours after the last symptoms . In all cases , we follow the guidance given to schools and nurseries from the NHS .  Information sheets are on display in the schoolhouse for hand foot and mouth. As we are heading towards the winter illnesses period , please ensure that all your phone numbers are up to date so we can  contact you quickly if we need to. If we do call you , please pick up your child as soon as possible - we do understand that it can be very frustrating when you're working to get that call , but we need to try to keep the spread of  infections/virus as low as possible to ensure the health of all the children , their families(who may be elderly or pregnant) and the staff.  Please also remember  to call us if your child will not attend nursery through illness or for any other reason.  Thank you for your co-operation.

All the children have been enjoying our  new PajamaDrama sessions with Dini on Tuesday afternoons -  and I rather think that the staff have too! Catherine , our french specialist , has been very impressed with the progress made in her Wednesday afternoon sessions , and will be accelerating the programme as the sunflowers are learning so quickly- mais bien sur!......et grands  felicitations to Catherine and her husband who are expecting a baby early next year :-) We do love that sort of news at Craigton!

A quick reminder to please persuade the children to leave their toys/precious objects at home, unless asked to bring them in for show and tell . These invariably are  lost/broken/borrowed and this can cause great distress - thank you .

The Christmas cards designed by the children are back and you should all have them  now - Please return any orders as soon as possible - we need to get these sent off by the end of next week to ensure delivery on time.

The sunflowers thoroughly enjoyed their recent railway adventure- we'd like to thank the lovely people at the Deeside Railway , who laid on a special train just for us , and ensured that the sunflowers had a fun, informative and exciting day ! Please have a look at the pictures of this trip at the entrance to the sunflowers room .

That's all for now - more soon !

Thursday 20 September 2012

one more thing!

Yes its me again!

Since posting the earlier blog , Scottish Water have begun working on the road directly outside the nursery . The road is closed - you can only access the nursery from the top of the hill - ie please come up School Road or Coronation Road and then downhill into Craigton Crescent - you cant get to the nursery from N Deeside Road . I'm really sorry for the inconvenience - we weren't notified that this work would be happening .
The children are enjoying watching the digger and drills tho!

Holiday weekend

Good afternoon everyone ,

We are all enjoying some sunshine today at Craigton - as I write this all the children are outside enjoying exploring in the garden . There's activity in the grassy area - still den building happening , looking at insects (millipedes and spiders today) collecting leaves that are starting to fall , and some lovely imaginative  play in the sandpit - fishing with rods they have made and some are busy at the outdoor kitchen hoping that there's a good catch, while others have gone for a walk around the village and a visit to the library before tucking into  one of Georgia's lovely lunches !
We do try and spend time outdoors daily , and as the weather is becoming more autumnal , please ensure that your children have suitable outdoor clothing with them every day - at this time of year that means warm waterproof jackets and trousers or suits , boots (and soon hats and gloves) . Please also make sure they have soft soled shoes or slippers for indoors and a full change of clothes - thank you .

The schoolhouse children are continuing with their focus on Literacy and Numeracy with activities, songs and games to encourage early language and counting skills . The snowdrops are also developing a sensory area to allow the smallest of our Craigton children to investigate different textures , sensations and smells . The sunflowers are continuing to look at trains- this topic is very popular and the children are still coming up with lots of ideas. Please have  a look at the floorbook on display in the entrance area . They will be going to see a real train next week - they are off to Deeside Railway on Friday  to enjoy  a special ride just for the sunflowers - all will need to be dressed for outdoors that day as they will be going rain, hail or shine!

Our thanks to Deirdre Strachan who has very kindly donated lots of plant pots to us - these will come in very handy as Jo from Gardening4Kids will be visiting tomorrow to help the children plant winter bulbs and annuals and get the growing area ready for winter .
Next week we will also welcome Dini  from PyjamaDrama who will be leading drama , music and movement sessions with all the children on Tuesday afternoons- the sunflowers had a taster of this last week  and had great fun , so we're all looking forward to Dini's visits . We also of course , have Catherine , who comes on Wednesday afternoons for French activities with the sunflowers- her fun songs , games and puppets are always a firm favourite !

The Scottish Executive are continuing with their PlayTalkRead campaign and will be increasing their advertising of this in the coming months . They have developed some new activities and ideas now available on their website  www.playtalkread.org
They have also issued a '30 things to do before you're 3' list which is now on display on the Schoolhouse noticeboard- have a look - its should make you smile!

A reminder that this is a holiday weekend in Aberdeen and we will be closed on Monday. We know you all love coming here(as do we!) but please don't turn up on Monday as you wont get in!  This will be the last public holiday until the Christmas break - we close at 6pm on Friday 21st December and reopen 8am Thursday 3rd January 2013 .

And finally - I will be on annual leave from Monday for 2 weeks, returning on Monday 8th October. Emails will not be answered during this time - please call the nursery if you have anything you wish to share with us. If you have any queries about changing attendance , invoices , funding and cash payments, please wait til my return as the staff are unable to help you with these . They will be happy to help you with just about everything else, so please call if you have any questions- thank you

Enjoy the long weekend !

Wednesday 29 August 2012

Good afternoon everyone ,

We have all been very busy at Craigton  recently -  the children have been spending time outdoors(despite the weather) Den building continues to be very popular- the children have been using canes, logs , tarpaulins , blankets , guttering , plant pots as well as the existing structures in the garden to make wonderful covered areas which have sparked off some very imaginative play . We have had , castles and boats , supermarkets and garages , trains and bus stations and even a restaurant using the outdoor kitchen - these have helped to develop all areas - physical skills , problem solving , co-operation , negotiation and language skills as well as giving opportunities to explore mathematical and science concepts ....and its been great fun too! We will continue to spend time outdoors every day whenever possible , so please ensure that your child has suitable outdoor clothing every day. As we move into Autumn this means warm waterproof jackets and trousers/suits , and boots or wellies . They will also need a change of clothes each day as they will get wet and muddy outdoors(and some soft soled shoes or slippers for indoors) .
The snowdrops, bluebells and buttercups have also had the opportunity to explore the wonderful world of minibeasts , inspired by the huge amount of creatures that have been resident in our garden this 'summer'- there have been some particularly impressive slugs this year! Over the next few weeks they will be focusing on literacy and numeracy , with lots of stories, rhymes and songs to encourage language development and early numeracy skills .
Meanwhile the sunflowers have been investigating all things to do with trains . We are using floorbooks in this department - this is a way for the children to contribute their ideas - these are discussed in groups and noted in the floorbooks , along with comments and pictures by the children . The development of any topic can be seen in the floorbooks(including some often fascinating tangents!) When not in use , the current floorbook is on display on the table in the entrance area , so please have a look at them . We will soon be expanding this with mindmaps for parents , so you can add your own suggestions or share interesting information with the entire class . This year the sunflowers will also be focusing on a particular experience/outcome in the CfE so that these can be covered in depth . The current focus is Health and Wellbeing 0-04 - this is about understanding your own feelings and having respect for the feelings of others. There's a lot going on at the moment that will affect the children( some starting school, others moving into new departments)  and this focus gives them lots of opportunities to discuss how these transitions affect them all and to begin to be able to manage change . For more information on CfE , please visit   http://www.bexcellent.org.uk/   this a great site for both parents and children explaining the CfE .
Staff news : the sunflowers will be joined by a new nursery assistant next week . Chantel  Brown recently left  school , and is really looking forward to getting to know all the sunflowers and their families. We said goodbye to Emily and Cari  recently , and Jen will be finishing this week too - they have all  been with us over the summer but now have to go back to Uni and college  to continue with their studies.

Its also time for our self evaluation to be submitted to the Care Inspectorate . This does take some time to complete and we would like your contributions too . Copies of last years evaluation will be on display in each department by the end of this week . Please have a look through this , and if you have anything you'd like to comment on or add, please email   marion.barker@clns.co.uk    before 19th September so I can include them in our submission. - Thank you

One of our Craigton parents , Alison Siggins , is trying to get a group together to start a Foot Stars programme for 2-3yr olds on Mondays at Peterculter Sports Centre . Foot Stars provide coaching to young children in the early stages of football through imaginary play that children can relate to in everyday life. For more info please visit http://www.footstars.co.uk/.  If you're interested , please contact Alison at alison_siggins@hotmail.com

Dont forget that you can leave your own comments on the blog , or add an instant reaction by checking the boxes under each entry - you will need to visit the blogspot to do this  http://craigtonlodgenursery.blogspot.co.uk/

And finally a reminder that the nursery will be closed for the local holiday on Monday 24th September . We shall also close at 6pm on Friday 21st December re-opening 8am Thursday 3rd Jan 2013

Monday 27 August 2012

Good afternoon ,

Many of you will know of Lava Jewellery Design on North Deeside Road . You may also know that Duncan   ,  Jacqui and their daughter Erika are a past Craigton family and still keep in touch with us :-) It seems that Erika has inherited her parents talents , has begun to design and make her own jewellery and is now preparing for her first exhibition to celebrate the studio's first anniversary. Pieces are priced between £1 and £5 and proceeds will be donated to Alfie Milne's Trust and Culter School funds .
The exhibition will run for three days only so please go along Thursday September 6th 6-8pm , Friday 7th 9:30 am to 5:30pm or Saturday 8th 9:30am to 2pm . Best wishes for a successful exhibition from all of us , Erika!

We have had several incidents recently of children arriving at nursery with food in hand- May I please remind you that this is not permitted under any circumstances . We have several children attending the nursery with allergies- in some cases these are severe and any reaction is potentially life threatening . We carefully monitor all food  and other materials in the nursery when any of these children are with us to ensure that they do not come in contact with anything that may cause them harm - please help us to do this by not bringing food into the nursery , or allowing your children to do so. It may only be a biscuit or a little chocolate , but they could cause serious reactions to another child .
We also ask that you don't bring cakes/sweets  etc on birthdays or other occasions for the same reason. These will not be distributed at nursery and will be returned to you - we do always celebrate the children's birthdays and will often bake some treats here - but we have all the 'free-from' ingredients and recipes to ensure the children's safety . Your co-operation would be very much appreciated - Thank you .

The first Parent Forum meeting of this school year will be on Wednesday 5th September . If you have anything you'd like raised at this meeting , please see any member of the forum - this year they are : Dawn Blessing , Erin Brown , Hazel Farquhar , Claire Molloy and Alison Siggins . We'll have a photo display as soon as possible after the meeting so you can spot them , if you dont already know them!

Another appeal to ask you sign up with easyfundraising.org.uk please . If you do this , almost every time you shop online  you will be raising funds for the nursery- it doesn't cost you a penny  , and you'll be able to access discount codes and special offers from 100's of retailers so could even save. And if you download their find and remind tool(which raises 50p) you don't even have to log onto the site - it will tell you if you're visiting a participating retailer - there are hundreds of these - including ebay , Amazon , John Lewis , Debenhams, Boots etc . Its a brilliant way to raise funds with absolutely minimal effort - we currently have 18 supporters who have raised over £200 this year , just by signing up - please join us !

And finally .... a reminder that the nursery will be closed on Monday 24th September

Thursday 16 August 2012

Good afternoon

Hello everyone ,

We are enjoying some much needed sunshine today - all the children have been out in the garden this morning , making the most of some long awaited summer weather. We've also been out and about the past two weeks - both the sunflowers and the buttercups have  made trips to the library , and we all had a picnic in the playing fields too . There have been walks around the village , visits to the post office to send letters and parcels and much excitement watching the workmen with their digger and other machines on School Road .
All the children have continued to look after the plants in the garden , and Jo from Gardening 4 Kids will be here tomorrow to help us harvest our produce- we are hoping for  a bumper crop! .

We have also had quite a few goodbyes to say , as children have left us to go to 'big' school - there will be more of these over the next week too - its always an emotional time for us as well as the families- some children have been with us since they were babies , others are the 2nd or even 3rd child in a Craigton  family and its always hard to say goodbye. However , all these children are ready to move on , and we  wish you well for the future - please come back and see us ! A huge thank you from all of us for the lovely goodbye and thank you gifts , and for donations to the Staff Development Fund - very much appreciated :-)

We shall also be saying goodbye to some staff soon too. Jen and Emily have been with us all summer and will now be returning to their BEd  studies in Edinburgh , while Cari will be going to college in Aberdeen - its been lovely having you with us and we hope to see you all again very soon.  But we will also have the return of term -time staff - Debbie came back this week and Charlotte will be returning next week !

Looking ahead to the coming school year , we are currently piloting a new web based observation and assessment tool for pre-school children which we hope will give both children and parents the opportunity to become more involved in sharing and recording information on the children's development - more will be issued about this once the staff have had  a chance to become familiar with the system , and get rid of any glitches !
We observe , assess and chart the development of all the children in the nursery , and use this information to develop individual plans for each child, supporting them to reach their individual potential in all areas of their development  .  In the Schoolhouse , we follow the guidance given in 'Pre- Birth to 3' and in the PS building , the CfE . Information on these is on display on the noticeboards in each building. We do need your input too though , so please share your child's experiences with us - each child has a home book which we'd like to be updated regularly - just take it home with you and tell us what you did at the weekend- pictures would be great too! Please talk to staff in your child's department if you'd like more information.

I have only had 2 volunteers for this years Parent Forum , so at the moment we are unable to go ahead with this . It would be  a great pity if we couldn't continue the Forum as its a very good way of  encouraging communication between parents and the nursery. So , please contact me if you'd like to join - its only 4 meetings over a year  and I'd like to get started as soon as possible . Thank you .

Some reminders:
Please call to let us know of your child will not be attending nursery for any reason , or if someone other than the usual person will be collecting them . We will call you to check if we are not expecting someone , even if we know them .
Please ensure that you close and chain the garden gates each time , and that the doors to both building are closed behind you . Please do not open the doors to anyone else , even another parent - staff need to be aware of who is in the building at all times .
Please drive very , very slowly in the carpark , and do not climb over the fences/gates or allow your child to do so.
Your co-operation for the above is needed to ensure the safety and security of all the children at the nursery - thank you .

Don't forget that you can leave instant comments on the blog , or write your own - you will need to log onto the blogspot to do this    http://craigtonlodgenursery.blogspot.co.uk/   it would be really useful to have your feedback . Also , if you'd like anything posted on here - a charity event you are involved in , some amazing news , or just a new family friendly place you have found , please let me know and I'll add it next time .

And finally ,
We shall be closed on Monday 24th September for the Aberdeen Holiday and from 6pm on Friday 21st December til 8am on Thursday 3rd January 2013

Monday 6 August 2012

Health notice

Good afternoon ,

We have several children in the sunflowers reporting tummy bugs over the weekend . Please be aware  of the symptoms , and remember that you need to allow 48hrs after the last symptoms before your child can return to nursery, and if your child becomes ill whilst with us , we will call you and ask you to take them home asap . Tummy bugs are highly contagious so please be extra vigilant in your hygiene, especially handwashing - don't forget that we have hand sanitiser units in both buildings for everyone's use . Thank you.

I am still looking for volunteers to form this years Parents Forum - please contact me very soon if you're interested in joining as I'm hoping to have the first meeting towards the end of this month .

I'll  look forward to hearing from you !

News

Good afternoon everyone ,
and a happy Friday to you all.....and the sun is shining too!

A few items of news that may be of interest .

The Scottish Government has launched a new national website offering help and support to vulnerable children and families on child protection issues . The new site includes clear, accessible information on what the public should do if they are concerned for a child's welfare. It will also feature  a range of links to downloadable materials for children themselves , including cartoons and online games providing child safety tips. http://withscotland.org/public

CAPT(Child Accident Prevention Trust) have just published safety packs for parents that are now available through their website. The packs contain information booklets and DVD's with advice on how to avoid accidents involving young children
 http://www.capt.org.uk/who-we-are/news/capt-launches-packs-parents-first-time

The environmental charity Aberdeen Forward is set to extend with a new venture , the Aberdeen Forward baby shop . The shop will provide good quality preloved baby goods. The project will compliment Aberdeen Forward's successful Real Nappy Campaign. The sale of the items will support the shop and ensure that the quality items benefit the wider community while avoiding waste . They are currently accepting donations of : Prams and pushchairs, high chairs, cots(no mattresses), travel cots , stair gates, fire guards,  changing tables , baby clothing and bedding . For further information or to arrange to donate items please call 01224 560360 or email   admin@abzforward.plus.com

And finally , I am looking for volunteers to join this years Parent Forum . The forum meets 4 times a year and is an opportunity for parent representatives to raise any issues , share information and contribute to the future of the nursery(and feed this back to other parents) . Id like at least two parent representatives from each department  if possible , so please let me know if you'd like to join us - those who were kind enough to give up their time last year are very welcome to return , but we will need new people too as several have now left the nursery to go to school . I'm hoping to have the first meeting towards the end of August , so if you'd like to volunteer , or just want more information, please contact me soon . Thank you .

Hope you all have  a lovely weekend - enjoy the Olympics - and lets hope the sun hangs around !

Petition for Childcare Vouchers

Good afternoon everyone ,

I've just received an email telling me that there is a campaign underway to increase the current childcare voucher allowance from £55/week to £75/week . This could mean a saving of an extra £300 per parent per year . I'm sure that you'll all be interested in any savings that can be made on your childcare costs.

Below is a link to the e-petition - please have look and sign if you'd like to support the campaign. And please pass it on to any of your contacts that would be interested - Thank you

Monday 23 July 2012

Congratulations!!!!!!!!

To Roz (buttercups) and her partner , Adam , who got engaged at the weekend :-) I'm sure that you'll join all of us in wishing them a long and very happy future together !

And as if that wasn't enough excitement , the countdown to the Olympic games is well and truly underway . The sunflowers have been making friendship flags using designs based on the Olympic rings , and having some very informative discussions about the events - there does seem to be a real buzz about this!

All the children have been busy in the garden, sometimes dodging the showers, sometimes not ! They have been looking after their strawberries , potatoes, beans , sunflowers and lots of other things that have been planted recently . We also had Joanne from Gardening 4 Kids here on Friday , and we planted pots with grass seed that will be used as outdoor seating for the children .
Due to the very damp conditions , the plants have needed lots of attention this year - and they have been getting it ! Its also attracted a huge amount of snails and slugs and other assorted wildlife - the children have  spotted these all over the garden , and some have been brave enough to handle them and show them off to the others . This may be as a result of a visit from Zoolab last week for our very own Animal Olympics . Oh yes , we had giant centipedes , cockroaches , lizards , snakes , spiders and rats all showing us their racing talents . The buttercups and sunflowers really enjoyed this visit and asked lots of questions- some of them were very enthusiastic about handling the creatures(others less so!) and we must say thanks to Zoolab for such and entertaining and informative visit .

This is the time of year that we have to say goodbye to quite a few families as the children move onto school or other nurseries for their pre-school year - we all wish you the very best for the future and hope that you'll keep in touch- stay signed up to the blog and please come along to any events - we'd love to see you back.
Each year this means transitions for the children , and feedback from your experiences of this has been mixed this year. Donna(sunflowers) is our transition co-ordinator and as such will be attending a meeting in August with representatives from across the city . She would be very happy to pass on any comments/concerns you have about your child's transition to school, so if you have any , please email then to me , or speak to Donna directly(Donna works Thursday and Friday)

The schoolhouse children have had a great time with their holiday theme so have extended this . I hope you've all seen the passorts and holiday displays they have created - they're lovely!  They also had fun in the garden with the bubble machine last week(never fails to fascinate!) and we had great excitement when we were showered with what looked like snow , but on closer inspection turned out to be willow blossom!

So , even if the sun is reluctant to show itself , we are making the most of summer  at Craigton , and continuing to play and learn and have fun !

More soon

Friday 6th July : Tillydrone Lidl

for more information on this , and some great play and literacy activities , please visit   http://www.playtalkread.org/

We all had a lovely time in the garden yesterday and are hoping that the rain will go away so we can get back out there again! The children have been busy planting flowers and strawberry plants with Joanne from Gardening4Kids , as well as looking after the beans , sunflowers and potatoes that were planted last month.

The buttercups, bluebells and snowdrops have been finding out about everything to do with holidays recently- where to go , who with , what to take with you(and why) how to get there . This has prompted activities and discussions about  beaches , sandcastles , staying safe in the sun , trains, planes , caravans and camping , visiting family and friends, other countries, weather  and lots lots more - Ill bet that Disneyland was mentioned too! Don't forget to tell us if you're going on holiday.

The sunflowers have continued their sporting interests following our Craigton Olympics last week . Aren't we lucky that there's so much sport around this summer?????- football , tennis ,  golf (courtesy of Mr Trump) , and then the Other Olympics in London . I have heard that one of our Craigton families were lucky enough to get tickets for this and are off to London next month to cheer on Team GB- an amazing experience - hope you have  a wonderful time! The rest of us shall just have to be glued to the TV (or becoming hermits to avoid it altogether!)
They have also had great fun this week with their new indoor/outdoor kitchen/BBQ - the box it came in has sparked some interest too!

Application forms for Pre-school funding have now been issued . Every child eligible for this over the school year 2012/13 should now have a form . Please return this to me , along with the requested documents, by Friday 6th July.
Please also return any photos/payment asap. We have several parents eagerly awaiting extra copies , and I cannot supply these til all the orders are returned .

Following some recent requests , can I please remind you that we are not able to accommodate swapping sessions unless this is a permanent change . Also , we can only offer extra sessions if we have space . We are registered for a certain number of children and we cannot exceed this . We will always try to help if we can , but sometimes its simply not possible .  One off extra sessions should be arranged directly with the staff in your child's department.

I am on holiday from this Friday 29th June returning Thursday 5th July . Email will not be monitored during this time , so please call the nursery if you need any information or wish to tell us anything . Please keep any queries regarding attendance , funding , invoices , vouchers etc til my return as the staff are unable to help you with these matters . Thank you .

Dont forget that the nursery will be closed on Monday 9th July for the Aberdeen Holiday .
A reminder that we will also be closed on Monday 24th September . We will close at 6pm on Friday 21st December and re-open 8am Thursday 3rd January 2013.

Hello again ,

I've just been told that there are no order forms in the sunflowers photo packs for those who wish to have extra copies . I'm really sorry about that! If you would like extra copies of the class photo, please write this on your payment envelope , or email me    marion.barker@clns.co.uk  . If you don't want the  photo, please return asap as we have several parents anxious to have extra copies!  Thank you

Post Olympic Post

Good afternoon everyone ,

A huge thank you to all those parents, grandparents, aunties and uncles who came along to our Sportsday yesterday . We were very fortunate with the weather(other than a brief shower) and the sunflowers had great fun participating in the races , cheered on by the buttercups as well as parents . The athletic standard was very high , and although not everyone stuck to their own lane (or indeed any of the rules!) I hope you'll all agree that the Craigton  Olympic Event was a great success .  A particular mention must go to those of you who 'volunteered' to take part in the parents races - I think it was the highlight of the day! Its always brilliant when parents get into the spirit of things and your participation and support is always very much appreciated. We are aware that you all have other commitments, and that it can be very difficult to rearrange these in order to attend events at nursery , so we all thank you for coming along and helping to make it such an enjoyable day .
For those who graduated yesterday , Mrs. Mackay and all the staff at Craigton wish you happy and enjoyable times at 'big' school . It has been a pleasure to be part of your lives so far - we'll miss you all . Please stay in touch and come back to say hello.

Next week we will be welcoming a new member of staff to the buttercups . Lauren Horne will be joining us as a nursery assistant from Monday . She's looking forward to meeting and getting to know you all , so please take the time to introduce yourselves - there are a lot of faces to recognise at Craigton!

The Duthie Park Ranger Service will be running a series of children's nature activities on Tuesdays over the summer. Posters for this are on display in both buildings with further information on the activities and how to book - (booking is essential)

Dont forget to let me know if you have anything you'd like to share with other parents /staff on the blog - Ill be happy to post events or useful information.

A reminder that the nursery will be closed on Monday 9th July for the local holiday

Graduation

Good afternoon everyone ,

as I write this , it has finally stopped raining and the sun has come out - lets hope it stays that way - if so,  we will be having the sunflowers Sportsday/Graduation at 3pm tomorrow . The forecast for tomorrow is...... heavy rain :-( but keep everything crossed that they are wrong this time! If it is raining , or the ground is too wet, we will have to cancel the sports , but the graduation will go ahead indoors . So please come along and join us in marking this milestone!!!!!! The graduating Craigton class of 2012 are : Timmy , Marcus, Maddie, Emma, Jake, Andrew J, Kathrina, Calvin, Finley, Amelia and Poppy .
Mrs. Mackay hugely regrets that she will not be able to attend the graduation this year , but has asked me to pass on her very best wishes to all our graduates (and their families) , as you start at 'big' school!

A very warm Craigton welcome to Carrie Kenrick who  has joined the sunflowers this week  . Carrie has recently left Cults Academy and will be starting an  Early Years course at Aberdeen College later this year . She will be with is part-time over the summer to gain some valuable practical experience before embarking on her studies.

Breaking  news :  The Sunflowers full class photos have arrived - you will find them in your child's pocket . Please note only the full class photos are here - the graduation pictures will follow . If you'd like to buy your picture , please follow the instructions in your pack(paying by cheque where possible). If not , please just return it to us .

Dont forget that the nursery will be closed on Monday 9th July for the local holiday

Summer in Scotland!

Good morning ,

sadly we had to postpone the sunflowers sportsday yesterday as the ground was too wet to go ahead . We will try again same time next week - 3pm Tuesday 19th June . The forecast is for rain at the weekend and into next week :-( if it is raining on Tuesday , we will have to abandon the sports day , but we will have the graduation ceremony indoors . Lets just hope that the weather improves and we can go ahead .

Meanwhile , all the children have been very interested in the Olympic Torch Relay - many went to see this on Monday evening and we've had some lovely accounts of it - especially the police motorbikes! We have been    making our own Olympic torches , and encouraging the children to find out about the Olympics , although most are more interested in the football at the moment!

Don't forget its Father's Day this Sunday 17th June - remember to check your child's file as we'd hate anyone to miss out on a special gift!

Craigton Olympics -1

Im sure that you're all aware that the Olympic torch will be coming through Culter this evening - I hope that you all manage to see it (and get home again!) ...and it means of course that tomorrow is our very own Olympics- its almost like we planned it ! :-) Yes its the Sunflowers's Sports Day at 3pm . If your child is not normally here on  a Tuesday afternoon , please bring them in at 2:45pm(no earlier please as we have lots to do !) You will already have had letters asking that your child wears their team colours on the day - please ensure they have suitable footwear too .
Everyone is welcome to this event - not just sunflowers parents - so please come along and support the Craigton athletes. You will be expected to join in too so be prepared! We also have a short graduation ceremony for those children starting P1 after the summer , and refreshments for all. Please note that seating is extremely limited , so bring something to sit on . The forecast is for cloud and 11degrees.....but so far not rain :-) but if it is raining , or has been and the ground is wet , we will have to postpone til the same time the following week . Lets just hope we dont need to!
Don't forget to let us know if you're planning holidays over the summer, and if your child will be leaving us to go to school or another nursery , please let us have leaving dates (email   marion.barker@clns.co.uk)

And finally , a  reminder that the nursery will be closed on Monday 9th July and Monday 24th September this year .

Olympic Torch Relay

Good afternoon everyone ,

I've just been checking out the road closures for the relay and just wanted to draw your attention to them . Most affecting the Culter area is North Deeside Road which will be closed from 6pm to 8pm on Monday 11th June . This is from the city limits at Culter all the way into Aberdeen . There are also extensive closures throughout the city including Market Street and Union Street . I think its fair to say there will be considerable traffic problems both on the Monday , and Tuesday . Please allow plenty of time for your journey on those days - it may be wise to pick the children up as early as possible on Monday , as there will be no access to N Deeside Road from 6-8pm . For a full list of all road closures please visit  http://www.northsound1.com/news/olympic-torch-traffic/

We shall be having our own Olympics next week(see what I did there!) The sunflowers Sports Day is Tuesday 12th June 3pm . All welcome to come along . Please note that seating is very limited , so bring along a rug/mat. The forecast so far for most of next week is ......wait for it......rain!!!!! If this is the case , we will postpone til the same time the following week - that's Tuesday 19th June 3pm . Watch this space.
Assuming all dry , please come along and cheer on the athletes- you will be expected to participate too , so wear your trainers! After the races , we shall have a short graduation ceremony for those children leaving to start P1 , and refreshments for all .

A reminder to please register at  http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/craigtonlodgenursery    If you do this , you will raise money for the nursery each time you shop online - You can download their find and remind tool bar , that will alert you when you are visiting a participating site so you don't even need to log on(and downloading this will raise 50p!) There are hundreds of retailers on this(including ebay and  amazon) , many with special offers or vouchers on offer ,so you could even save money too! We currently have 15 supporters who between them have raised over £150.00 since we registered last year ...and all they had to do was register.

Don't forget that if you'd like to share anything with everyone at Craigton , just let me know and I'll post it on the blog - and any comments/reactions would be great . You will need to visit the blogspot to leave comments/reactions- you cant do this through your email.  http://craigtonlodgenursery.blogspot.co.uk

Jolly Jubilee

Good afternoon everyone ,

Yes indeed it's Diamond Jubilee Day and the children have been very busy celebrating this . We are all wearing red, white and blue(and crowns!) today , and the dressing up stocks have been plundered to clothe an array of princes and princesses . We have watched footage of the coronation to see what the Jubilee is all about, and have been having some very interesting conversations about  palaces and castles , kings and queens , and all things London!  The sunflowers are  planning a picnic this afternoon and as I write this , they are all gathered around looking at a card that has just arrived from Buckingham Place - Yes its true!!!!!! The sunflowers sent the Queen a message through the Jubilee website , and the Queen has sent them a thank you card - very thoughtful of her - Id imagine she's quite busy at the moment!

And despite this momentous historical event, most of the talk here at Craigton is about the Spring Fair on Saturday :-) A HUGE thank you to everyone who donated raffle/tombola prizes, baked anything , bought raffle tickets , but most of all  came along on the day, and dug deep into those pockets  to help make it a wonderful occasion for all . It was lovely to see so many of you there - its a day that everyone works very hard to arrange , and its wonderful to have all the parents , children and staff coming together , raising funds , but most of all having fun! Your efforts resulted in us raising an astonishing £821.73!!!!!!! Well done to each and every one of you.
Several raffle prizes were unclaimed on the day - I think the excitement was too much for some! The following have prizes waiting for you in my office : Amelia White , Harriet Brown, Daniel Davison and James Aberdein- come and get your winnings.

And if all that wasn't enough for you - next week we have the Olympic Torch passing through Culter !!!! Yes , on Monday 11th June  , the relay will be going along North Deeside Road , and the following day , will make its way from Dyce into the city centre . Although this is another exciting , historic occasion , please be aware that many roads will be closed and there will be traffic chaos on those days!  Please allow lots of extra time for your journey .

Now for some staffing news:
Jillian(sunflowers ) has accepted a position as a nanny - she is currently on holiday and will be starting her new job on her return , tho I'm sure she'll come in to say hello/goodbye! Best of luck Jillian!
Christina (4-6 schoolhouse) will also be finishing this week . She has now left school, and although she will be doing some relief work over the summer , she will no longer be coming after school every day!
Leanne , our current 4-6 girl in PS will be taking over from Christina in the schoolhouse , and staring next week in PS we have our new 4-6 boy! Matthew is going into S6 and hopes to become a teacher , so he's looking forward to gaining lots of very valuable experience, and the sunflower boys in particular will very much enjoy having a 'big' boy with us !
The sunflowers have also been joined today by Emily Foote. Emily has just completed 2nd year of BEd  at Edinburgh Uni and will be with pre-school part-time over the summer .

A reminder that all relief/support staff wear different uniforms  from permanent/fulltime staff - this is not meant to confuse you(honest!) but to make the more experienced staff easily identifiable to you if you need to talk to us .

Please also note that children in for the morning session only must  be picked up BEFORE 1:30pm .  After 1:30pm they are included in our afternoon numbers and this affects our ratios . Fines for all late pick-ups will be strictly applied.Pick-up time is when you leave the nursery- ie if you arrive at 1:29 but don't leave the nursery til 1:45 , you will be fined . We'd really appreciate your co-operation with this - thank you .

Don't forget Sunflowers class photo is tomorrow- Wednesday 9:30am - ALL sunflower children please be here at 9:30 ready to be photographed . Sports Day/Graduation Tuesday 12th 3pm.

The nursery will be closed on Monday 9th July and Monday 24th  September.

Spring Fair

....or should I say Summer Fair? :-) Saturday 2nd June 12-3pm - tickets for this are now on sale in both buildings £5.00 for up to 6 people(if only 1 or 2 then a small donation would be appreciated) the admission includes a BBQ so please all come along and bring your friends and family too! Its always a great day with lots for the children to do and many things to spend all their(and your) pocket money on ! The staff and children work very hard to get everything ready for this and we're all looking forward to seeing you there .

As summer has delighted us by coming along , many of you will be planning your holidays - can I please remind you to let us know if you're going away- in writing please(email is fine marion.barker@clns.co.uk ) . Staff also need holidays at this time of year so careful planning is needed . It helps us immensely to know who will be in on any given day .

Looking ahead , we will soon be saying goodbye to those children leaving to start P1 or spend their pre-school year in another nursery . If your child is one of these , can you please let us know their leaving date , and the school/nursery they will be attending as soon as possible.  We need to prepare transition documents for children leaving to go to school/other centres before the end of June when the school year ends . Again , please  email me on the above address or in writing - Thank you .

And finally a reminder to ensure your child has a full change of clothes with them every day , suncream and  a hat - all clearly labelled .  Clothes do get dirty outside(particularly when suncream is added!) and sometimes wet too due to waterplay - so changes are often needed .
